No more spare tires

I just spoke with the BMW NA Genius line, and starting with MY 2025, spare tires are no longer available (at least in the US). You get the charming mobility kit instead. Anyone out there heard anything different? I had called BMW NA as the Ordering Guide only shows the mobility kit as standard. No options for spare tires.

He's partially right. But he's also full of crap for not telling the whole truth. I ordered my US Spec, MY 2025, 540Xi in June. I found out the spare tire is no longer standard for 2025. The mobility kit is now standard. However, the space saver spare tire is available as a $150.00 option. It is Code 300. I ordered it. It's on my order sheet, and it's on my Build sheet received back from BMW AG accepting the order. So no, it's not standard. But Yes, it is available as an option.

In MY 2024 it came with the spare tire as standard, but the mobility kit was a $0 option. It deleted the spare tire in favor of the mobility kit. Now they charge for the spare. Its right there on the options sheet.

Look in the Sticky's someone posted here the MY 2025 options sheet back in May. I attached it here.

Thanks for the info. BMW's distribution of info has tumbled quite a bit - very disorganized from website, build your own, "Genius" assistance. Very sad.

No Problem. I just don't understand why they would say outright that it's not available. They should have said the Spare tire is now a $150 option as the Mobility kit is now standard. So either they don't know, don't want to bother, or are being told to push the mobility kit. I suspect in the near future, maybe 2026, they will no longer be available, and are trying to get rid of back stock. I'll look at the date codes on my spare when it gets here.

Maybe people would be able to see it for themselves if BMW would update the configurator site. It still is reflecting 2024, even though you can no longer order a 2024. I suspect it's because they are trying to point you to the dealers that have unsold 2024 Spec-Cars in your area that are Close to what you want (I have never seen more than around 80% and they are almost always Black, White, or not M Sport Pro.) Why let you build a 2025 if you can get a leftover 2024. Meanwhile other models like the 4 series have moved to the 2025 MY in the configurator.

I have to say, the ordering process felt really opaque for my G60. I started the process and placed my order before I joined this forum and learned so much more after learning from folks here.

I’ll say my 328i SW was initially spec’d with runflats *that I hated* and I switched out to regular tires and carried a “comfort kit” with me for years. I ended up getting quite used to the setup and somehow only caught a couple of punctures when I was at home over multiple years of ownership.

That's all well and good Richard. I suspect I would be more comfortable with just the mobility kit and without a spare, if I hadn't had the experience I had last year in Italy. I had a rented Peugeot SUV and was driving with my wife from Florence to Milan, to catch a flight the next day back to Spain. We were on the Autostrada somewhere between Florence and Bologna. when we got a flat tire. We pulled to the side of the road at one of the SOS boxes, and, after seeing there was no spare, but a repair kit, I called the rental company's Roadside assistance number. they said to look at the tire and see if I could use the repair kit. I looked and it was shredded at the sidewall. So no go. They said they needed to locate me, but for some reason there was almost no connectivity and they were not receiving my Pin Drops. I could see a Km Marker and told them. They still couldn't find me. So they said push the button on the SOS box. They could not see it. In the end a tow truck showed up, but it wasn't theirs, it was the highways dept. So we were put on the back of the flatbed, and driven while INSIDE THE CAR to the depot (Again middle of nowhere, on a Saturday). And stranded by the road for hours waiting on a taxi to take us to Bologna to get another car. We got there and the Rental company refused us another car because we had not brought theirs. I told them I had followed their instructions but they didn't care. And they would not even rent us another car. I had to go to another company to rent a car right at closing. I got a POS Skoda Superb Wagon, not even cruise control, and finished the drive to Milan. In the end it cost me about 1000 euros for the price of the tire, the tow, the taxi, and the second rental car. None of it reimbursable. Not to mention the hours of frustration, ruined last day of holiday, etc. All of this was because of not having a spare tire.

Keep in mind getting a puncture at 40 MPH and being able to pull over immediately is not the same as one when you are traveling 85 MPH on the freeway in the fast lane. By the time you get to the side of the road someplace safe, the tire is pretty much done for. A mobility kit won't help you there. And you will wish you had that spare tire. I won't ever be caught without one again. When I travel, I insist on a car that has one if I am driving any distance outside the city.

How exactly does the "mobility kit" work? Is it one of those things that spray expandable 'goo' into your tire to temporarily plug the leak?

I've had two tire related issues in the past 3 years. In one incident I picked up something that caught the tire and within <10 minutes of picking it up, the low tire pressure warning light came on and I pulled over on a residential street to assess what was wrong. The location of the object was in an area that preluded repair. Fortunately, the tread depth difference at the time between the existing tire and new one, were within Audi's tolerance for installation without having to either shave down the new tire or replace the others.

The one I had this year, was a really slow leak. I was able to take it to a tire shop and have them patch the tire. $25 later, I was back on the road.

My concern, or perhaps question about the kit, should you elect to or absolutely have to use it, is does it ruin the tire so that it could not be patched?

Yes, to the first, and last. You attach the container of Goo to the compressor, and it fills the tire with goo and air. Then it says you have to drive on it for 5 miles to spread the goo around. then stop and adjust the pressure with the compressor. Don't go over 50 MPH And replace the punctured tire and sealant container as soon as possible. So I assume it ruins the tire from being repaired.

If only $150 to add the spare it’s well worth the price. You lose some trunk space but unless you’re using the full capacity of the trunk regularly it’s not a problem. I’ve had the optional factory spare in my G30 and while I’ve not needed it, it’s great peace of mind.

Yeah, I should have been clearer; I wasn’t necessarily advocating for the comfort kit, rather that this doesn’t feel like a new development to me.
