530i Belt or Integrated Starter Generator?

Hi,

I notice that for BMW new 520i, only in Europe it has a Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) with 7.5s acceleration. Other countries in the world uses
Belt Starter Generator (BSG) with 8.1s acceleration.

I know BSG is much worse than ISG, and Benz had dropped BSG in 2021. BSG is often easily broken and many customers complain this tech, and also BSG can only provide little help for your engine. Such tech has a congenital defect in the beginning.

My plan is to buy a 530i out of Europe. Will 530i be equipped ISG out of Europe, for example in Australia or Asia?

This will affect my buying plan very much since I do not want my car to be equipped with an old tech that Benz already dropped in 2021.

Anyone knows BSG or ISG for 530i out of Europe this year? Thank you!

Hi,

for sure there are two options for 520i - BSG and ISG.
Version with ISG will have in specification 18HP and 200Nm of torque for electric motor, BSG will have 11HP and 25Nm of torque for electric motor.

You can also check on website with parts:
https://www.bmwautoparts.net/en/cata...3/VT/P/347/272
There are only EU and USA market models.

I noticed that models with BSG have engine specification like B48P
models with ISG have engine B48N or B58N
plugin hybrids have B48X or B58X.

So for US models 530i is probably BSG and 540i is ISG.

My 520i EU spec has engine B48N and ISG.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Janusz

Was reading that BSG still provided 100Nm+. For ISG models, are there still belts? I know on Mercedes mild hybrids, the HVAC is ran off the 48v system.

Yes, there is a belt for HVAC.

I think that it depends on local emission standards.
Cars with option S1DF/01DF (EU6 rde II) have ISG, other might have BSG.

Where did you get info for the torque? I was reading 200Nm for all mild hybrid models.

Both EU spec B48N and US spec 530i - B48P show the same "crankshaft starter generator" on the website you linked. Does this mean both are ISG?

Two examples of 25Nm of torque: 520i from Australia and 530i from Canada.

Please take a look at the starter and gearbox for B48P:
B48P starter: https://www.bmwautoparts.net/en/cata.../5057/5445/0/0
It is belt driven starter generator

B48P gearbox
https://www.bmwautoparts.net/en/cata.../5057/5445/0/0
no starter inside gearbox, this is external starter / generator on belt

B48N starter
https://www.bmwautoparts.net/en/cata.../5049/5437/0/0
this part is only for cars without 01DF (EU6 emissions), so cars with 01DF option will not have BSG

B48N gearbox
https://www.bmwautoparts.net/en/cata.../5049/5437/0/0
this is gearbox with integrated starter and generator and is used in cars with 01DF option or 08R3 (COC ADDITIONAL SCOPES)

the same gearbox as for B48P for cars without 01DF
https://www.bmwautoparts.net/en/cata.../5049/5437/0/0

It is confusing and it looks like BMW is only providing ISG on markets with more strict emission regulations and is trying to hide it on other markets.

You have to contact dealer in selected country and check what is exact specification.

So strange because there is conflicting info out there.
