Interesting New Video on EV Batteries

Some interesting points made which I hadn't heard before (although the difference in battery life may be fairly minimal).

In general, it's always better to limit time at a high SOC and to charge at a slower rate if possible to preserve battery life. So if your normal routine is to charge every night, and your battery gets to the SOC target many hours before you normally leave, try charging at a lower amperage that still gets you to the target before you leave.

This is especially true with PHEVs, which have such a small battery it's hard to avoid getting to 100% way too early.

I just listened to this podcast and thought it was excellent. There’s so much to learn about battery tech. We spend way more time thinking about discharging the battery (efficiency, how much hp we can turn that energy into) than how to thoughtfully care for/charge it. As temperatures have been going to the heavens in NorCal this week I’ve been wondering about %Soc and ambient temperature and degradation. I find this stuff super interesting.

I enjoyed that very much. Lots of information that I wasn’t aware of. I always have my level 2 set at 48a for no reason. I will reduce it when charging overnight.

I’ll leave my L1 charging at 15 amps.

Interesting, thanks.

I guess I have been doing it right since 2017

I use my L1 (slow) charger a 1-2x a week and when I need to drive far (200+ miles), I use my L2 charger and charge to 100% overnight, and then drive the next morning.

Most days my car sits in the garage with 25-60% charge; with 40-45% charge being the norm.

I have done this with my all my EVs (BMW, Jaguar, Tesla and Audi). So far, I have been very happy with battery health, range and reliability.

I think this is what the “EVs suck” crowd misses out on. They are used to hearing horror stories that happen because people buy the wrong type of EV or refuse to understand how they work. Just like ICE cars, if you take care of it the right way, it will last and take care of you. We actually care about battery health and longevity as a community.
