Wireless Charging Improvements?

Anybody know if the wireless charging has improved in the 2024? I have a 2021 540 and it's basically useless.

Not sure what improvements you’re looking for but the G60 has 2 trays in front of the cup holders fo phones. The passenger side is just a tray to hold the phone, doesn’t charge. The driver’s side charges and has cooling ridges/holes so the phone doesn’t overheat when charging like my G30 does.

BMW uses Qi chargers at 15w, however, for any non MagSafe charger, apple will throttle back charging to 7.5w.

That is the heart of the problem for us iPhone users. I encounter constantly on i4 and lots of discussion about it here.

The issue is a combination of (1) insufficient power to iPhone and (2) high power usage by iPhone running wireless CarPlay and mapping software (Waze, Google Maps etc). Wired charging is a partial fix, but not full. And unfortunately, wired CarPlay not possible.

BMW should really offer MagSafe as an option for Apple users in lieu of Qi.

Magsafe adds magnets to Qi wireless charging. There's no magic to magsafe

Not exactly true - "BMW uses Qi chargers at 15w, however, for any non MagSafe charger, apple will throttle back charging to 7.5w." Difference ion power provided is significant. Whatever BMW provides, it should send 15w to iPhone or else it's really deficient - and needlessly (unless they are actively saying FU Apple and Apple users).

Magsafe option would be great. Do any other manufacturers offer it?

The throttling is done on Apple's side. It's not BMW, it's Apple wanting you to buy devices that support their ecosystem and not the Qi standard.

Of course, but that is not to say BMW could not "fix" the problem for Apple users (I am speculating more than 50% of BMW's user base) by offering a MagSafe option. Heck, I bet Apple users would pay $100 or more for this option if BMW simply made it available.

My big point is that its a relatively simply fix for BMW, but unrealistic to believe Apple would change its policy to placate BMW users.

I would 100% pay up for a Magsafe option.

I was thinking about getting a MagSafe mount but the design of i5 vent doesn’t seem practical to mount anything.

I live with my iPhone overheating on the i4. I try to remember to remove it from the charger at some point during long trips so it can cool down. It only got so hot once that the iPhone stopped working for a period of time. It's an annoying situation, but one I learned to live with. My frustration is that BMW could so easily have made the car more Apple friendly and elected not to (going back to the point that Apple throttles Qi charging that is not MAgSafe).

I had a rented G30 in San Francisco last year. My Samsung S20+ wouldn't fit in the charger without removing the case. Fast Forward to a few months ago, I test drove a new G60 and the same phne fit easily in the tray and started charging. I did not know the second tray in the G60 is only a holder. I'll have to make sure I keep an Iphone cord in the console for the wife, if I ever let her ride with me. I am ordering a 2025 540i in Oxide Grey. She says it will be MY car since she only likes SUV's.

I just use a USB cord plugged into the seat back. The wireless charging is slow and, as others have noted, between CarPlay, Waze and phone calls, I’ve had the phone lose charge when wirelessly charging.

Apple charges quite a fee for MagSafe licensing. Majority of the world do not use iPhones, more so in China where a big chunk of their sales are from.

Yes, they can separate it by market, but Apple (and only Apple) going against standards is not really BMWs fault.

Sounds like an Apple problem. I use an Android phone and do not use any android auto functions because it blocks notifications from my home security system. I map from the phone and the charging tray is useless for viewing phone. I use a cup holder phone holder/wireless charger and be done with it, because the air vent holders do not work on the G60 hidden vents. Cars are not phone friendly and always seems you need extra conglomeration of hardware to get things done.

My ‘24 540ix charging pad basically just keeps my iphone 15 Pro from draining while streaming Sirius (I listen to internet Sirius music channels not much satellite.) or while using Google Maps directions. Can’t really call it a charger. I will say it doesn’t overheat my iPhone like my covered/in-armrest useless ‘21 Audi A6 charger did. So it at least ‘works’ on this BMW.
