I found this video about a screen protector for the in-car display. Anyone planning to do this? I like the idea of protection, but I don't think I have the stomach to do it. It stresses me out when I do this to my phone - I can't imagine the stress of trying to do this perfectly with zero bubbles or lint on a screen this size! Plus, I'm not sure I really need it. If I use the control knob on the console most of the time, do I really need a screen protector?

I haven't applied one. I feel like if you mostly use the iDrive controller and have a good microfiber cloth to wipe the screen that is sufficient. I mean, it's not like a phone that might get dropped.

I personally think a screen protector for you car is a waste of money. How many times are you going to drop it and are you going to use a nail when you touch it. Absolutely no need for it in my opinion

I received one for Christmas and installed it. The one I received is the full piece tempered glass one and was a little tricky to install but was able to do so without any bubbles, dust specs, lint, etc. It also took me almost 30 minutes because of prep time - I wanted to make sure the massive screen was clean before install, prepping the tempered glass protector, and then applying it on while ensuring I got rid of all the air pockets. No problems whatsoever with drive assist usability or the touchscreen functionality. There’s a slight lip at the edges but covers almost everything completely.

I was thinking the same thing as Trevor G and PsychDoc and skeptical altogether, but have also seen scratched screens on friends Teslas screens from accidental hits with rings, nails, or however it happened Figure it wouldn’t hurt and was also a gift, so decided to install it. No issues so far.

I've got the BMW one in my G31 and I would not go without it. The gauge display has a small mark from the dealer that happened when the car was prepped.

The cover for the navi is cheap, non-intrusive, and keeps things like new.

Me personally this is a waste of money. If it was my wife's car then definitely yes. I am sure she will find a way to drop the display somehow. She always drops her phone.

I don’t touch mine often. Most things I don’t touch. A destination I type on my app and send to BMW. The only thing is music and I use the controller for scrolling through music.

Is this really even an issue…? Come on… what’s actually going to damage the touch screen!? (It’s not a phone or tablet that could be dropped….as others have said…)

There’s more than dropping to be considered here. Scratches are always a risk, even when using microfiber clothes. Microabrasives can be ground into the screen and cause scratches, a common issue even on the plastic covering the traditional gauges on earlier F-chassis BMWs. There’s a thread in the F22 forums with some very sad folks who’ve received swirl scratches from simple wipes of the plastic.

I think the current curved display is glass, though. Much harder to scratch vs plastic.

Oh, that’s definitely less of a concern then. The gauge cover and idrive screen are soft plastic in most of the F-chassis; I use compressed air to clean mine. Happy to know the curved display is glass!

The piano black idrive center console though has gotta be a scratch magnet.

Yep. Especially during cleaning time. I mentioned above that my digital gauge display was damaged during dealer prep. It's pretty easy for scratches or chips to occur.

The protector is cheap. I don't care for the pointless M logo on it, but some will.

it may protect random scratches... but it will definitely not protect the screen if a violin case bumps into the screen and cracks it... as I have learned the hard way on a Lexus factory navigation screen protected by a screen protector. the violin case was in the passenger seat and I grabbed it as I was leaving the car in a hurry... It was $1900 to replace the nav screen. The $1000 carbon violin case, on the other hand, did its job by protecting the violin.

I love classical music, but I do not have the talent to play. The violin case belonged to a family member is a professional violinist.(with a DMA, Doctor of Musical Arts degree). I was just chauffering the violin at the time. I'll have to ask, but I think it was a French violin made in 1890s?

When I smashed the Lexus nav screen with the violin case, I decided not to file a claim with insurance. A friend who worked for Geico told me that it would have been approved, but with my $1000 deductible, Geico would only pay the $900 difference. I decided not to file it to maintain my impeccably clean record of 24 years.

It's simple and harmless. You can try it on your phone or tablet first.

There are not many things you can scratch your screen on the car.
But a protector is easier to clean imo.

This video is very helpful. Has anyone discovered a link to purchase something like this? Definitely looking for these softer products than hard tampered glass. I bought one and it was very hard to install due to the size and the curve. I ended up hitting my screen with the edge of the protector during installation and created a scratch and then gave up. Luckily it was at the border of passenger side and unless I look for it I can't see it (also thanks to the size...). What an irony.

Totally agree with the above that it probably can't protect any impact. My goal is only to prevent random scratches from my passengers' nails, bags or jacket buttons/zippers as they get in/out of the car. My mindset is to protect it in the first 2 years or so while I sweat about any single little imperfection, and if scratched by then, peel it off, enjoy with the original finish while you gradually accept and embrace all the little dings, dents, curb rashes, etc., and for me that's probably when the real fun begins.
