I try not to file claims with insurance to keep my rate low. My i5 M60 costs less to insure than my cheaper Jaguar XE. And I just got notified that they charged me too much and are issuing a refund. When I lived in Florida, there was a state law that all windshields were fixed for free. Not sure if it’s the case anymore. I kept separate insurance on my Jaguar windshield as it had wires running all through the glass for instant de-ice which required an OEM windshield. I didn’t know if BMW was the same, so I just purchased the protection package to be sure.

I guess we’re lucky here, if you get optional glass cover in your policy that doesn’t count as a claim.
I took a rock a couple of weeks back that took a large chunk out, insurer allows OEM glass on vehicles under 2 years old, but the insurers glass people informed me there is no third party glass anyway. One thing to watch out for is the glass moulding. BMW Australia had the glass in stock, and when the glass guy came out to fit it, found the moulding wouldn’t fit with generic, so was 4 weeks to come from Germany |

Depends where the chip is. Mine was in the line of sight so they said it would be best to have it replaced. This was all covered under insurance.

you can wait and see if the crack enlarge over time. (like spider net)
the glass is multi-layers. not a big issue if only outside layer cracked. i have been driving with 2 cracks over 10 years, 1~3cm each. |
