Connectivity when away from your vehicle

What services are supposed to work when you're away from your vehicle and out of bluetooth/UWB range?

Sending settings to the car? e.g. departure times?
Picture of the car from internal and external cameras?
vehicle status updates?

I find that when I'm away from the car like this none of these services update, I have to be in range of the vehicle. I was under the impression that some services work but I don't see documentation on what is supposed to work and what requires the eSIM.

None of those services require eSIM. eSIM is for totally different features. All of those work from far away from the car. I don’t know what you mean when you say none of the services update. You have to actually trigger the remote cameras to get an updated view in the app. The camera update usually fails the first time for me but then always works on the second try.

ah ok, my picture taking failed and I should have tried again.

I also tried to update my departure time from one end of my house and it wouldn't update. I chalked it up to the app not being able to connect to the car. After I went to the car it seemed to wake the car up and work. I am wondering if it was a different issue. I hadn't driven the car in 2 days and maybe it was just asleep and the app couldn't wake it until the digital key connected when I went close. That seems strange, but I had to go open the car door. Then when I went back in the house with the car fully awake it updated the departure time from the MyBMW app.

The app goes through BMW's servers. The vehicle goes through BMW's servers. The only pairing between youe vehicle and phone is the Digital Key, but this was done after completing a crypto exchange.

The car doesn't go in to deep sleep, normally. It always listens in case BMW pings it whether for telematics or because you're doing something in your app. If it does, then maybe you have other problems. Take it to your dealer.

If you're having app trouble, then either the car is having trouble communicating (bad signal, bad module, etc.) to the servers, or your app is.

Thanks, I am going to see if it keeps doing it or it was a one off thing. Thanks for the explanation.

Certain functions are definitely by range. They are defined as low, medium, and high range. I saw it today when I was looking at blue tooth settings.

This is noted in the app on the main screen under the blue “more information” choice. Basically only remote control parking requires low range. Everything else is long range and always available.
