New i5 owners tips and tricks

For all you experienced i5 owners out there, what does a new owner need to know, change in the configuration when we get the car? I hope to pick mine up in a few weeks so I wanted to get educated.

Congrats on the new vehicle! I have had mine for about a month or so. Set up your digital key when you have both keys with you and get familiar with the voice control. Set a custom phrase like “Hey yo!” and find out it what it can do. It will come in handy.

Are you new to EV’s? (I was, so will assume you may be)

Go with B mode driving.

Always hit precondition before you head out.

Use the native Nav app - when you put a destination in it’ll give you your expected time and state of charge upon arrival. Also when you want to use a fast charger, if you put in the destination the car will ensure the battery is preconditioned by the time you arrive.

You can customize the ambient light bar colors easily, and dim them automatically at night.

There is so much. My SA sat in the vehicle with me and walked me through every setting. The most important part is pairing the physical key with your phone. Make sure you do that before driving off. You can choose vehicle only settings, so go through those first. Exterior lighting, interior lighting, doors & windows are all selections. I am still finding things buried in iDrive. Start driving in personal mode, just to get a feel for the car. Most things are the same as any other car - seats, mirrors using buttons, climate control is easy to figure out.

Also, on your steering wheel are the controls for what you want to see on your heads up display and your dashboard. I change those up frequently. To add something to favorites, press and hold the icon. I saved parking and interior lighting as I change my light bar depending on my mood. Parking is useful as you can change the view of you car to check your surroundings.

You should experiment with voice controls. I'm OCD about fingerprints so I use the iDrive wheel to make selections on the control display. But I also use voice controls 50% the time to change seat and steering wheel heating, changing drive moods, opening sunshade, changing interior color... It's surprising how well it works!

I’d check out this video as well - it’s pretty comprehensive, with the exception of the “always charge to 100%” part….

One more: do not rely on Electrify America as your only charging solution. Add some other options into your myBMW app via Shell Recharge and/or add a home charger. Home and office have been the key for me.

How do you add home and office? Home doesn’t obviously show up as a charging station.

Office would depend on the charger they installed there. If it’s free for you to use, just plug in and choose charge now.

It doesn’t need to be added to the app - I have a ChargePoint account which I use at work - I tap my phone on the charger and it unlocks the cable and I just plug it into the car and charge. At home, I just plug it in to my Wallbox - no fuss.
