That’s nuts. Surely the parts are less than a new car cost.

Did the airbags pop? If they did then it’s a liability concern.

not sure why the other pics didn't upload.. I just added them again. see post #1.

none of the airbags deployed, which was why I assumed the damage was "minor" On the other hand, maybe there are hidden damages like the engine or frame?

I’d guess the frame/chassis must have taken some damage here

Economics. That car likely has a very high salvage value at auction, and settling out a total loss with the amount that car will return at auction must have made more sense than repairing it. 'Constructive total loss' is the industry jargon used in this scenario. Airbag deployment or non-deployment is a complete non-factor in that decision making process, that's the case with any car. This car will likely end up overseas, that's where a large number of these are going.

I think it depends on the insurance company.

An 80 year old man hit our son in his 2023 i4 M50. The insurance repair was a little over $40,000 and took almost 5 months. The msrp of the car was $76k. State Farm refused to total it, and repaired instead.

Same thing in our M2. Msrp was $68,000. Accident damage was $35,000...and State Farm refused to total it and repaired. CRAZY!!

I bought a new house a couple of years ago and insured it with State Farm. I was going to switch my 3 cars to State Farm as well. However, somehow State Farm's quote couldn't come remotely close to what I was paying GEICO(which was almost half). I checked again last December to see if they could have a better quote starting 2024. The agent tried and tried and still couldn't come close to my GEICO renewal price.(still about 50% of the lowest that State Farm could offer)

State Farm is a real puzzler for me.

I played poker with a buddy last night who works for State Farm. He said that the last 20 years of profits State Farm made in California on home and auto policies was eaten up during the past two years here from all the claims due to wild fires and stuff. He said that as a result, State Farm is no longer offering home policies to new customers in California for a while.

Personally, it sounds a little extreme to me, but that's what he said. Not sure if it's the same in your state, but interesting nonetheless.

I can believe it. We’ve been customers for 23yrs and this year they sent an instruction to us asking for additional tree clearing and to replace our roof by Jan 2025 or our policy would be considered void - no notice, no requests or calls.

We regularly get our trees and shrubs trimmed back each year to comply with local ordinances around wildfire control and honestly coming in to try to poke holes in our roof (shingles likely good for another few years) is a sh*tty way to do business. Suffice to say we’ll be policy shopping this year.

If you are a Costco member, try Costco. We have our car insurance with them and have for many years and the price seems great. They wouldn't cover our home due to location (fire zone), but we've been very happy with their Auto coverage.

For home insurance, try Progressive - they cover us and we have had no issues so far (even though some of our friends have had their insurance company not renew them when their existing policy is up). Good luck!

We have State Farm. Homeowners is really low in Seattle with no natural disasters ever. Mount Ranier could erupt or we could have a big earthquake that everyone says will happen but never does.

Our vehicles are $250 per month for all 3. A $98k F-150 Lightning, my $97k i5, my son’s 93 Ford Probe GT plus he is a 19 year old driver. Can’t complain.
