Has anyone tried getting quotes for insurance yet? I did today since my car went into production. I either ran into most companies did not want to insure it, or the ones that did said it was a high value vehicle.

The cheapest quote I got was $1900 for a year, and that was with a multi car discount and having my house insurance with the company as well. My X7 cost more then this car and I was only paying $1100 a year. So it’s baffling to me i5 is considered “high value” and the X7 was not.

I can't speak for the US, but certainly in the UK I have found that EV's are much more expensive to insure that ICE cars.

I have read reports where insurance companies are saying that to repair the batteries after an accident just isn't economically viable, and in some cases unsafe to do so, and they are then writing the cars off. This in turn is increasing their costs and subsequently our premiums are going up to cover the increased risk that a car (and EVs are more expensive) is going to be written off.

It's the EV tax. My i4 costs more to insure than my f10 535i when new.

Actually I got a quote that is only $50 or so more than I was paying for my 2018 540xi. So does not seem to be an EV tax here. $1000 collision, $500 compressive deductibles.

It’s the opposite for me. My 22 Taycan cost less to insure than my 2018 750i x drive. MSRP of the Taycan is $20k more than the 7.
