Engine won’t turn on

Hi
Hope you are all well.

Looking for some insight/help.

My 118d 1 series 2008 BMW engine cut of on the motorway and now it won’t turn on.

What could be wrong - there was a bunch of engine oil on the bonnet...

Thanks.

a few things. engine oil tends to mean a mechanical failure could be loss of oil or a fracture or loose fitting. If your drive belts are all intact and your oil level is close to normal start looking at battery wring and then remove air filter and inspect.

If your driving and the tachometer needle slams to zero that normally means an electrical failure.

If your driving and the tachometer needle drops in stages to towrd zero that usually means something like interrupted fuel delivery - diesel fuel is usually more dirty so filter inspection is more frequent ?

I see this is your first post but the subject is a good one.
