I was also going to suggest M5x. I personally love M50's but M52's are equally robust and respond to boost really well.

In this day and age, I wouldn't waste the money on stroking an M20 unless you want to keep the original engine in the car. I have a 2.9L stroker in my E30, I love it, but I did it 20 years ago when M50 swaps were still big bucks. Today you'll spend engine swap levels of money building an engine and end up with something that's significantly less powerful than what you could have had with a proper swap (using a BMW engine of course).
We run a modified M20 Eta enging in our lemons car but it has years trickery and we have full use of a machine shop. Great when three of team members are machinist's and have spares to play with. M20's are becoming increasingly hard to find in certain parts of the country.

I am thinking about an engine for my 2002 and the K24 is on the list. I like M50/52/S50/52 and know them well but it’s a long motor and the 2002 bay is probably shorter than the E30 bay. Mildly turbocharging the M10 with a stand-alone ECU is another possibility.
