My wife of 53 years has always pulled her weight.
We've been retired 10 years now and the fact that she always had a job has made a BIG difference in our retirement income. I'll try to explain. We spent our 1st year of marriage apart while I did a 12 month tour in Vietnam. Shortly after I left for Vietnam, she landed a job at the local movie theater, working the ticket booth and candy counter. (she was 18) I sent home 95+% of my Army paycheck to help her pay rent, etc. She saved most of it. During our last 20 years of work, she was given profit sharing at the medical firm she worked at. Concurrently, I did 21 years at our local university, building a nice pension. Because my wife had a good, full-time job, I was able to start a TSA. Let me say that again. Because my wife was working, I could afford to start a TSA, contributing the maximum allowable under tax law. Think about that. So because my wife worked, we have her profit sharing and my TSA, both now rolled over into the appropriate IRA's for retirement. As a result, our net retirement income is 150% of our net working income. And, we haven't even touched her IRA yet!
