Buying used lens, but has a dent?

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a used lens, and found this one, which seems like a good deal except for the weird dent on the inside ring. The seller says the lens functions as new. Anyone know if this would affect anything?

It has to be from an impact, it could be superficial or the reason it's a deal. I would pass on it, besides it's just a consumer level lens.

It most likely has no impact on the lens performance. Try testing it before you buy if possible. Or ask the seller if he offers a return policy. Given its a kit lens and not a pro lens, there are probably several good deals out there for a flawless one

That was initial gut feeling too. Thanks for confirming!

It's an ebay lens so I wouldn't be able to try it out and no returns either. I'll pass on this one.

Two things. If the price is discounted enough, it should be good to go. That piece is a trim/retention ring that is easily replaced with a new one. Secondly, if it arrives and the performance of the lens is effected, and there was no mention of a focus problem or an operation problem - it can, in fact, be returned. That's your Ebay protection - regardless of whether the seller accepts returns. Anything not as advertised can be returned.

I have a small crack in the corner on the front lens of my canon 70-200 f4. It doesn't affect images and lens performance at all.

This looks very minor and should not cause any issues at all.

This is not a prime lens (high end glass), and the only reason to purchase it at a "great price", would be if you are ok with throwing it in the garbage if it doesn't perform properly. As a serious amateur photographer, a lens that is dented, has a very high chance of being damage goods; and as such, I want no part of it.
Unless you are able to try it and verify its performance for your intended purpose, this proposition would be a hard: no thanks for me.

In my experience lenses are very robust, and if this mark isn't going to bother your OCD, or keep you from using filters/etc, then I wouldn't be afraid of it myself.

But I will say that eBay is not a good place in general to buy used lenses. Please try KEH.
