Golf: Driver selection. Help out a newbie!
I recently just started playing golf. I use my dad's old club.
He uses Callaway brand's carbon-fiber looking driver. It is VERY small compare to other huge-ass drivers. It is really hard for me to use the driver. (if I do hit it, it slices like crazy). I have 0 problem hitting irons. One thing I noticed, I used my buddy's driver with huge head, it was way easier to hit. He said something about sweet-spot being bigger, so easier to hit. I plan on getting a new driver and keeping the rest. Can someone teach me some basics regarding how to pick a new driver for a newbie? Oh, I lack in distance A LOT and crazy slice problem. (I heard something about "closed head" drivers preventing slicing problem?)

The best thing to do would be find a local teaching pro that has a good rep to get fitted. Without seeing your swing, not one sole on this forum can tell you what would be the best choice. With how much a good, new driver costs these days; I am sure you want to make sure you spend your money wisely.
A teaching pro can assist your swing speed, swing angel, and skill level to figure out what would be the best club selection for YOU! You will be able to hit all the drivers on the market in different sizes, degrees, and shaft straight. Also think about spending money on lessons because a couple of good lesions will drop your scores dramatically as for new clubs do not insurance that you will drop your scores at all. So look up the nicest local golf shop or golf course with the best rep (ask your buddies), make sure they have a PGA registered teaching professional, and get fitted. Like I said also look into lesions but make sure it is outdoors so you can see the flight of the ball. Indoor lesions suck. Good luck, L~R~G

I agree with the above sentiments.
But to answer your question specifically, a few of my friends have the Ping G5 and love it. |

you're probably like most and swing too hard, not square up the face, and don't release the club...
short quick fix, try closing the face at address...i know probably not the "right" approach but it worked for me. eventually i started turning over the ball and getting a slight draw...put the face back to square and now it's straight...

once you find the driver that suits you, buy it from a reputable seller on ebay
I bought my driver online and saved A LOT!

Screw Ebay. Support your local pro golf stores. The extra dollars are well worth it in the end.
Check out some the of the square drivers as they offer more stability through impact. I have played the Ping G2, G5 and Rapture and love them all. I am currently hitting a Titleist 907 D2. However like L~R~G said go get fitted and a few lessons will go a long ways. Good luck

Morgan Pressel, killer golfer and good looking too, great young talent.
Bestdriver, Taylor Made. G5 is a great weapon of yardage destruction. They are the most talented driver maker and really know how to make a club. GL |

Agree on the Ping G5...I could not hit my hand-me-down driver when I picked up golf 2 years ago. Got fitted, got a few lessons and a Ping G5...driver is one of my better clubs now...good luck.

Lessons, Lessons, Practice, Practice, then if you still want a new driver, swing everything in the golf store, pick the one you like best. I like the Taylormade R7 Burner but, you should buy what you like the best.
