Anyone play a trumpet or cornet?

I played for ten years and stopped when I was 20. Picked back up 51 years later when I was 71. I played a cornet back in the day. Bought a Strad and an Eterna Trumpet but just couldn't feel the love.

I went back to cornets and bought a couple. Bought some more-started giving them away to disadvantaged students.

Fast forward three years. I acquired about 30 and have around 14 now. I have 6 horns older than 1920. A bunch of them in the 40's and 50's. a month ago I bought a used 1985 silver Strad 184G with the Shepherds Crook. All I can say is wow!! What a horn. I can't say I won't buy another one if the price is right. But for now I'm good.

Anyone else play an instrument back in the day and start again?

i was in the Marching Band in Jr high all the way into High School playing the trumpet where we would compete and perform at various Field Show events and tournaments around the State back in San Diego. eventually i tried out for the Blue Devils in DCI competition. was very demanding and decided my job was more important at that time so i had to put down my trumpet and that was the last time i played

I played trumpet in a band and orchestra back in high school, I became “cool” and gave up. I regret it to this day.

My son (20) has played the trumpet, he has a King, for about 13 years and has travelled the world in a marching band, he has only just stopped playing but says he is going to take it up again. Made my heart smile every time he heard him and the band play. The first time we travelled with them to Red Deer in Alberta my wife and I, and just about every other parent where blubbering like babies!

Too funny, I still have my Yamaha alto in great shape in storage. Haven't touched the thing in probably 15 years or so. It's too bad since I used to play all kinds of instruments. Old Gibsons and Fenders just hang on the wall in the office as art now

I played the trumpet in 4th through 6th grades but lost interest. I sang throughout HS and had a scholarship for voice in college along with the engineering and academic. I've performed all over the world and even sang backup for Wynton Marsalis. With the exception of singing the National Anthem, God Bless America, and grabbing a score to sing The Messiah, I don't sing that much any more.

I do want to learn to play the piano, however.

That poor Yamaha probably needs a major tune-up. Which model is it?

Studied trumpet starting in 3rd grade and stuck with it through the summer after I graduated high school. I played in symphonic and concert band, marching band, jazz band, pep band, drum & bugle corps (soprano bugle), madrigal festivals (on herald trumpet), accompanied several choirs...and probably a few things I'm not remembering.

Switched to bass, but that's a separate story.

Didn't touch a trumpet until 2007, when I decided I had some unfinished business on the instrument. Studied under Charles Schleuter and Lynn Nicholson and got to a much higher level of mastery than I had in my "original" playing career. I did trumpet section coaching and some one-on-one lessons for my high school and a couple other nearby schools, trying to help some young players avoid the mistakes I'd made and the bad guidance I had been given. It was pretty satisfying. Music programs in the schools have been hit hard with budget cuts. I've reduced my commitment quite a bit, but I still play and teach some. I bring a trumpet to the cabin and blast away in the pole barn with all the doors closed. I have enough land that I don't think anybody is hearing it, but if they did it'd just be one more "crazy Dave" story at the local taverns. They all think I'm crazy as a shit-house rat, and I kinda relish it.

Some day if you ever want to play a Cornet. That's what I played back in the day. Buy a used strad 184G (shepherds crook) It blows anything out of the water. I have played dozens of cornets.

I played trumpet in middle school, but picked it back up a few years ago (I’m 28). One of the best decisions I made! My brother is a musician so he records me on his songs from time to time.
