Driving Tail of the Dragon
I've taken 2 of my 3 up there. Only one that hasnt ridden it is the E30 M3 - hope to remedy soon. Its a great stretch of road but there are a lot of cops and a lot of bikers. Dont expect to do any time trials, but its fun even at the posted limit because the turns are just endless...

I live fairly close. Have had most all of my cars or bikes on it at one time or another. Haven't taken the new daily 128i yet though.
Beautiful area.

It is getting silly, to much congestion and ridiculousness. There are some much better roads all around the dragon that get my attention now.

Too many rvs and tourists in the summer. Maybe there's times when the road is more empty.

Very nice!
Might I also suggest the Triple Nickel SR555? Over 62 miles of twisty roads and scenic views. |

As ShakyDog mentioned, there are a ton of great roads around the area. That said, when you can get a decently clean run on the Dragon all seems right with the world. My first exposure to the Dragon was during TT-East 2005, which was also my first experience with vehicles that didn't belong on that road. I'm in the red car:
I bought my TT RS in August 2011 from a dealer in Atlanta, and we ended up taking the scenic route home, making Killboy's weekly roundup in the process.

The road is now closed to truck traffic. It was a major hazard a couple of years ago, and trucks would routinely get stuck in the most airpinny bends.
Traffic on WE and in season in insane. However a clean run on an autumn morning is unbelievable. Plenty of other good roads around too. Now that snow has started, the road will be closed most of the time in winter. Very fun, but also very unforgiving. Take it easy for the first couple of runs. Off camber , mid apex bumps, blind closing radius bends and other surprises are there for your enjoyment but can also get you in a very tight spot if you don't know where they are. Also, stay in your lane. People get killed every year with that. Also, going to a road with curves just to cut and straighten them, hey. |

Don't get me wrong, back in 2003 I drove to the Nantahala Outdoor Center for kayaking and decided to take the 2000 Toyota 4 runner on the dragon. I dropped all of the windows (by all I mean the sun roof, all windows including the rear glass. I could here the motorcycles as the geared up behind me and I could duck as far to the right as possible to let them pass. I learned an important lesson that day. Front wheel drive cars suck, and the fact that a 4X4 4Runnner taught me this is kind-of funny. Had a blast, but since then it has gotten way to popular.

Man, we (the S2Ki club) went there in 2001. 94 S2000's, it was so damn awesome. Got several runs in, but had to do them early and late. I've wanted to take the Exige there ever since I got it in 2009, but never have, just a bear to drive all that way for possible congestion.
Maybe one day. |

I wonder if my gloves are still on the tree of shame. It was nuts when I rode it a few years back, can only imagine it on a beautiful weekend these days.

I went to school at UT, so I used to take my '98 240sx w/coilovers there all the time. Was such a blast to drive! After I moved to ATL and bought my E92, I only got to take it on there once, but man do I miss those curvy roads and mountains. We don't get those down here in south FL.

I go up often since its about a 2 hour drive for me. I will usually do a few runs in the morning and then hit other roads. My wife and I will go up on a Thursday night, stay in Helen, and get up Friday morning to drive Deals Gap and other roads and then spend Saturday at bars and wineries near Helen. I really like the Wolf Pen/Suches loop in north Georgia.

Gonna be taking a trip through Helen on the way to Birmingham soon. Really need to try to get the 1er finished and back on the road so I can hit some of the roads in the general area again. Tail is always fun if the weather is right and not a weekend. Also love Devil's Triangle.

I did it last summer - drove west through deals gap from NC to TN and then headed north. Did it late in the day so there was hardly any traffic but the sun was still out. Definitely something to do once. Would have liked to have been on 2 wheels instead of 4, but I had company : )
