R8 would have to be gated shifter only. The pre-DCT days in the R8 are horrible. That 4.2L V8 in today’s standards is kinda slow. If you can find a clean manual V10 R8, I’d go with that. Otherwise I’d easily have a DCT C8 over an old V8 R8. Also the early R8’s navigation and electronics are very dated now.

THIS.
If you’re debating between two cars that will spend more time at a dealership than on the road, might as well pick one that has some repairs covered for free. Even though they’ll still charge you $150 to “diagnose” the problem before fixing it and reimbursing. My C7 Corvette has a longer laundry list of sh*t that broke than actual thousands of miles driven. And that’s not including half of the sh*t that doesn’t work half of the time, but I just don’t want to deal with paying $150 to a dealership only for them to keep the money and say “can not replicate”. At least with the C8 you know when sh*t breaks, and it will, it has a reasonable chance of being paid for in the first 3 years, pending GM investigation and 6 months of back and forth. Someone on the Corvette Forum blew up his motor at 3,000 miles, and dealership insist they pay for the tear down to determine if HE is at fault for the necessary engine replacement.

Man, I'd have to go with... NSX. I see maybe one a year and I spend a lot of time behind the wheel. I saw a super clean one earlier this week in fact. My neck still hurts.
But I guess if push came to shove and I could swing the bills, I'd shoot for a V10R with the gates. |

Well....it's official, she gone. Gonna miss her dearly. Can't complain too much though considering how much money I made on a car that I go at to enjoy for 5 1/2 years..... it did better than most money market accts do in five years. That will be hard to ever do again for any car....you wouldn't believe what I bought it for and what I just sold it for. I'm going to enjoy the hunt for the next toy in the meantime Last edited by Socal_R8; 08-10-2019 at 04:33 PM.. |

After talking to some very knowledgeable car guys, the R8 cracked frame thing is completely overblown by a couple YouTube videos and car forums... says it happened to less then 1% of the R8's on the road and there was a total of four reported to the NTHSB between 2009-11
The biggest issue is the AC compressor and the expensive fix. Gated R8 might be the car to get next while waiting for the C8 .... I think those have hit bottom of the depreciation curve and might be a good time to find a good deal on one. We'll see ..... I think the C8 is going to depress a lot of car values very soon if not already. |

The fact that OP is asking means he is weighing whether to go with outright speed or the good old Euro feel of an old R8 with no warranty. That speaks a lot.
The answer may be somewhere in between. A used 911 S for about 75K which is probably the price of a brand new C8. |

Also the OP brought up the mid engine vs. rear engine. The current 911 weight distribution is about 39/61. The C8 is likely to be 40/60. Most cars like 458, current NSX is 42/58. The old 911 is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 34/66. So in that respect, the current 911 will probably drive more like a mid engine car and rear engine. Also the flat 6 will have lower center of gravity vs. V8 or V6 so that will help to offset the weight distribution a bit and dynamically will probably give the car more toward mid engine when the car on the move.
I don't know what's the weight distribution of the original NSX, but the NSX engine is transversely mounted so my guess is it will feel more rear engine than mid engine relatively because most of the engine weight is right on the rear axle. I also heard that the original NSX does have a tendency of losing its rear so there might be some truth to that. I believe in the current NSX, the original engine configuration which was supplied by the Japan Honda team was transversely mounted, but after the Ohio team had the chance to test drive the car, the handling was found to be unacceptable. After that, the Japan team had to modify the drivetrain to have the engine mounted longitudinally like most mid engine cars. With respect to the OP engine location preference, I actually think the current 911 will probably have better rear end control vs. the original NSX. |

I just not a big 911 fan, the Cayman is a better drivers car period. Unless you want to spend $150+ on a GT3 I'd much rather have an R8 then a 911 any day anyway What's the difference between a Porsche and a porcupine? Last edited by Socal_R8; 08-10-2019 at 06:54 PM.. |

Beautiful NSX you had there. You have the cash in hand now and maybe you should wait for when the new Corvette mid engine hits the streets and tested by the experts on the tracks and street and maybe get a test drive yourself. I have a feeling it’s going to utterly shock a lot of higher priced sports cars even more so then previous generations of the model did.
There are some pretentious snobs that look down their pompous noses at Corvettes and make snide childish comments but they’re just demonstrating their immaturity and insecurities. Good luck on whatever you choose.

What exactly is your budget? Most the manual R8’s with low miles under $80k looked a little clapped out inside. Those seat bolsters do not hold up well. 981 GT4’s are reaching low $80k, not a huge jump.

Being a R8 owner myself, get the C8. Gen 1 R8 is so much prettier, but can’t go wrong with the monster the C8 is for the price with a full warranty on top.
Contrary to popular belief, my 2012 vert purchased new has not been an out of warranty nightmare at all. Only thing to go out since warranty ended in 2016 was my oil temp/pressure sensor, a $350 repair. Even an oem battery costs less than my M3’s. It’s really not that bad. |

I think the NSX you had is MUCH more special than the R8 or new C8.
I would only get the R8 with the V10 otherwise wait for C8. |
