Audi announces new longitudinal/AWD automated manual transmission

Their third DSG transmission (not counting the Bugatti). 7 speed, 2 clutch, ~30 ms shifts, 550 Nm torque handling. Not sure on the 1/min limit. Looks like it can handle all of the Audi engines except for the 5.0 T (RS6) and the larger Diesels. 2009 model year availabliity? Sorry if this is a repost.

It'd be nice to see a comparison between DSG and BMW's DKG.

The rev limit is 9000rpm and the talk is it will be available in the latter half of 2008 being introduced in the Q5 first. This gearbox is different to the DCT in that it includes the transfer box and front diff of the Quattro system, so it's currently only available for Quattro cars (no fwd A4/A5 with get it).

Yeah, that's correct. I reckon both are basically the same apart from the Quattro internals.

Agreed. Sounds like they can manage similar torque loads as well.

Thing is though, what's the point of having a high performance engine revving out to 9,000rpm? I mean, what with CAFE standards and all taking into effect. I don't think there'll be many more high revving NA engines out there anymore.

One more gear, higher tq capacity, higher rpm capacity.
