Hard to say. I know a few people that have literally been saved by faith, meaning that if they didn't get help soon they would have likely committed suicide or overdosed. Confiding in someone is what helped turn them around, so I see that as beneficial.
On the other hand, someone who instructs people to get "healing" instead of much needed medical attention should not be giving advice.

The second part is what defines "faith healers". These people are dangerous frauds who hurt people AND take their money. It is blatant swindling, and should not be allowed. The point of this thread has nothing to do with religion, it's about people who commit fraud and scam others, often under the cover of spirituality. You should be ashamed of yourself for supporting them. Last edited by The Wind Breezes; 08-10-2018 at 06:17 PM.. |

How did you come to the conclusion that I advocate that? You are certainly on your high horse this week.

We have way too many laws already. Protecting people from themselves is really not the proper role of government in my view. I’m also pretty skeptical of the proposition that all of the people paying for such services are being defrauded. Different people have their separate reasons for doing things. Maybe some are being genuinely misled due to their own naïveté, but others may just think it’s fun, or desire to suspend disbelief. I don’t believe in supernatural psychic powers either, but I can’t affirmatively disprove it any more than I could disprove the existence of God. Don’t you think it’s a bit presumptuous to declare that your own refusal to believe in something you can neither prove nor disprove should be mandated on everyone else?
Houdini made a living debunking this stuff. If you want to go on a crusade, do that. But spare me more laws to save people from themselves.

I could make a pretty good argument that many of the people selling self-help books and services are snake oil salesmen. I could also make a pretty good argument that much of the field of social science isn’t science at all, and is in fact complete BS. Should we outlaw these forms of speech and association too? Here’s an idea, only government approved goods, services and communications should be allowed, so that no one is ever convinced to part foolishly with their money. Sound good? What could go wrong?
Or maybe the government and busybodies should just butt out and let people learn their own lessons.

So OP, if you want them outlawed would you want to get rid of the 1st Amendment as well?

Yes and no.
Some people just like to fall for that shit. It’s easy to control someone using their emotions. When people get desperate, they’ll do almost anything. |
