Selling my M240i, what next? M2 C, M4 ZCP, RS3 or ZL1?
So far, these are what I'm thinking ($60K-ish max budget):
M2 CS - If it's version of the S55 isnt crippled with a new encryption then this would basically be the 500+ HP track capable 2 series I always wanted. M4 ZCP - Used. Little bigger than I'd like but actually lighter than the m2 cs? Also massively tunable. ZL1 - I hate hate hate the visibility but even under the ridiculously sedate test drive I had it seems like a beast. Seems to be relatively tunable too. RS3 - Another monster tunable little car that goes up against the CS. Any suggestions? I'm kind of leaning to the zl1 because its just stamp and go, no launch control nonsense as far as I can tell. What’s wrong with the M240? I was thinking about getting it as my next car. Still a toss up between that and the M2 but I will need something with all wheel drive.

is it your goal to go to the track? the m240i4x4 and the RSundersteer audi aren't typical track choices.
if you haven't even gone to the track yet, don't worry about power. that car has plenty of it. there are hundreds of other things to improve on that you don't need more power for.

ZL1 is a class above in performance unless you tune the others, closer to equal then. 2SS 1LE is a track monster with the 305s and capability to back up the engine and chassis. ZL1 is similar interior and chassis with the higher HP/TQ engine. Reason I got the 2SS 1LE was it's basically a NA ZL1. ZL1-1LE goes too far to sacrifice normal ride characteristics IMO, although not anywhere near as bad as the strap-door-handle M4 GTS types.

Very few places actually need AWD, and I realize that a few do, but of the places that "think" they do, a large percentage do not. We drive on solid/compacted ice for a while in the winter here and you have to be able to start/get across intersections, where without a bunch of weight on the axles, AWD does help and for certain vehicles, is optimal...

Needed for DD use, or do you have another vehicle?
If not your DD, then ZL1 all the way. If you need to take people around, put golf clubs or packing boxes in it then RS3. The camaro is ridiculously awesome but the storage space is pretty terrible. M2 ZCP is another great option if you want to stay in the family. I haven't driven the RS3 yet, but I suspect the M2Z suspension is not as compliant. |

Do you know if chevy goes significantly under msrp on these? I know it depends on the dealer, but if I can get it in the 50s with no added options then it's a done deal
I love that they dont nickel and dime you over options like the Germans do Also, with the 3.5 0-60 etc times , are those without launch control ? I want a car I can just stamp on the pedal without brake boosting |

You mention the M4 is a little bigger than you'd like. The ZL1 is even bigger.

You might not like this, but best option if you want another BMW would be to pick up a used N54 powered car, do all maintenance and install a bottom mount big single conversion, and enjoy the car until the wheels fall off.
Particularly if size is a concern, a 2008-2010 135i, before they're hard to find that is. Even the E92 335is is smaller than the F8x.

I had a M3 in front of me today (in my 2SS 1LE). Those little M3 tires are so cute! The Alpha chassis ZL1 isn't all that big, but they sure did make it wide, it's wide and sits pretty low, so getting in and out is a bit difficult, especially with the ZL1 side-skirts (I installed). Inside you definitely notice that the Gen6 is smaller than the Gen5, not cramped, but this was obvious to me, more like the 4-series, vs. the Gen5 I used to have. Rear seats are for show-only, slightly more useful than Porsche, but mainly for extra cargo-space.

Not sure what 0-60 times I’m running, but the power is definitely there. Jb4 map3 (no meth), CG DS-1 catted DP, Remus catback, BMS CAI. Maybe it’s the xDrive, but I don’t use launch control and still keep up with SS Camaros, GT mustangs, and 5.7L challengers (6.2s are far and few between around me) from a roll. From a stop I pull them hard. Can’t say it’s my heavier wheels or my DWS tires (albeit wider than stock) because those hurt performance if anything. Really curious what your technique is and symptoms. If you’re auto, try driving around in sport/+ mode and see if that’s what you’re looking for. Sport+ keeps the revs I like so I use that daily. |
