Interesting that he didn't mention Bob Lutz as the person responsible for BMW moving to clay modelling in the mid 1970's starting with the design of the E21...

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I’m still not sure I understand. The differences between a vanilla 5 and the M5 in terms of body design are very small: bumpers essentially, and some extra/different holes in the fenders. The main body shape has been precisely prescribed from the beginning, since it is the core shape of the 5.

So what exactly is the purpose of the clay model here? What is he modeling really?

Its an entirely different car vs the 5 series...

Clay is for visualization of what they want the product to resemble. Lots of very subtle changes are made in this process.
