All that matters is you get the interview. That's your goal. Sometimes cover letters are important. I've sent some pretty outrageous cover letters in the past and sometimes they resonate with the person on the other side. That leads to an interview and getting interviews is the key.

- NO fancy paper, fonts, or formatting. Don't include 'fluff', just relevant stuff.
-Multiple proofreaders, and somebody to play 'devil's advocate' for poorly worded or unclear stuff.
-send a good cover letter - they are good at ignoring it if they don't care, but if they want one and you don't have it, you are SOL. But nothing cute or weird - tell them why you are a great fit for them, where/how you would like to be.
-Like in dating, say nothing bad about the old company, focus on what they offer that is unique, different.
