Hi all,
We recently had the windshield replaced on our 2007 MDX and when we went to peel the what I assume was blue painters tape off the top of the windshield this happened. It completely peeled the paint off the roof. I took a look at the area around where the paint peeled off and there are no obvious signs of existing paint damage. The clearcoat looks fine and there are no cracks or bubbles or peels anywhere on the roof.

We are now running around, getting estimates, working with the glass company and our insurance company to get this fixed. The glass company claims they are going to go after 3M to pay for the damages which I think is a total run around.

Any opinions on how to handle this?

Clearly an old and worn paint or paint adhesion issue with the car itself.

There is no universe in which this is anyone's fault but Acura's, or possibly the vehicle owner for failing to protects the car's paint from the elements over the years. I bet Acura says somewhere in the manual that you need to protect the paint. It is very easy to overlook regular waxings on a daily driver. The paint surrounding the tape in the pic looks very poorly taken care of but that could just be a dirty car.

I dont really think its the windshield installer's fault either. This was going to happen to anyone that tried to install a windshield. I'm honestly surprised that they are working with you at all.


I would get some touch up spray paint and clear coat, try to blend it the best you can, polish it, and move on.

I literally just cringe everytime I take my vehicle in for service because some damages are expected, either scratch, ding, dirt, etc...

I just expect it now that people are not as careful when they deal with customer vehicles.

Anyways, upon closer inspection, looks to be a paint defect, but I can tell that the surrounding area is full of contamination from years of not taking care of the paint.

I've seen pressure washers, rocks, and light objects hitting the paint and just peel. Happens to most vehicles these days with the thin paint and water based formula.

Has the roof been repainted at some point?

is the car dirty or is that just how the rest of the pain looks??? because if its not dirty there are clear signs that the paint is not in good condition..

For clarity, is this an actual picture of the damage? From this picture what is the tape doing that far away from the windshield? From my experience they just outline parts of the windshield and in some instances just two pieces on the roof line. Something is "off"

^This. My 02 and my 06 Acuras never had these issues...granted theyre not 07 but still.

That looks like some sort of substance was spilled on the roof...which was fixed by putting tape right over it....whatever substance it was sure was strong LOL.

Thanks for the responses all. Some answers:

So yea, that's right on the windshield line. Just to the right of the picture is the windshield, I can take a better photo...

They put two strips of blue paint on the top of the windshield.

It's been raining here in the Bay Area a lot lately, the black specs are probably pollen mixed with rain.

The car gets waxed/detailed once a year, and washed regularly.

As far as I can tell the roof was never repainted


Good to know the paint sucked during those years, the glass company is still working with us and 3M has sent there "investigative team" to check the tape... (WTF?!)

We got a couple quotes both in the range of $1700-$2600.

that's place seems legit, I look up my car (14' 320)for most common problem and it stated engine failure? lol... only one person complaining and person states that drove through a HUGE puddle of water.... and btw about that Honda paint 100 people complained...how many cars did Honda sell in that "era"...

I think chances are high - that your car has been repainted.

It depends on the state(you live in, Lemon Laws and New car sales laws) but sometimes a car can get damaged before arriving at the "selling" dealership. In this case... the manufacture CAN repair the car(ie paint it) and NOT have to tell the selling dealer nor the end buyer. There is a certain limit($$$) for the repairs... but I think its not more than 6% of the car's retail value. IF the car gets damaged by the dealer(ie: after the car is delivered by the manufacture, but before it is sold!) that threshold value is a lot lower... I think something like 3%.

Like I said it all depends on the state where you live in. But that's basically how it works. Also... this is ONLY for new cars... dealer demos and used cars(car has been registered at least once) don't qualify for this type of disclosure.

It's very common for a new car to be damaged by the manufacturer - in the transportation of the car to the dealer. IF it happens at the "port" the car is fixed and no one really ever knows. Also the trucker transportation drivers have a union and they can be mercifulness - to the cars. I've seen driver's crush a car's roof as they jostle and tilt a car on the upper deck of the truck trailer to get a lower car off. It's not a pretty sight.


At the end of the day... your car will need to be painted & blended for that panel. It sounds like at least the glass company is working with you. A lot of these guys might just say F.Off and let you deal with the repair.

I'm kind of surprised that glass company doesn't do a "smart" paint repair. That's when they use small air brushes to paint a small area and then blend it to the old paint. Most people can't tell in the end, of the repair. In fact most people can't tell a paint car or panel to a virgin/original painted panel.

Good luck in finding a resolution. I have to go with the repainted theory. Having owned three hondas in that era I have nothing negative to say regarding their paint or performance.

I can't believe all this effort and hassle on a 10 year old Honda!!

My friends then new 2007 or 2008 Honda Accord roof paint peeled adjacent to the back window, not even sure it was a year of ownership. Dealer repaired and did a good respray. So maybe there is something to Honda's paint quality back then.

Clearly you car has shitty paint, dont blame the glass company. Blue painter's tape shouldnt pull paint off your car. Duh!

Just an update, the glass shop paid to have the roof resprayed. Flame on.
