Any owners here that have trucks?
i know nothing about trucks. Just looking to get a toy, until I find the next "thing".
Is the Dodge Ram a good truck, generally speaking? They have this really cool trim called "Rebel". I like it a lot. And they're giving me $10k off sticker. I'm just not sure whether Dodge Ram trucks are the ones to buy. Obviously the competition is Ford and Chevy. Any input/guidance would be much appreciated. |

I know a few guys that have the EcoDiesel Rams and love them. More power and better gas mileage than the V8.
My coworker and I just drove from Pittsburgh to Cleveland and back in his and averaged 29 mpg. Unfortunately you can't get a Rebel EcoDiesel. I'd say switch to a different trim level and get the better engine. |

Been through a bunch of trucks from the main three (Ford, Ram, Chevy). They all have their pros and cons. But are basically the same when it comes down to it. Each has their top tier models, but it's still a truck underneath. Some people get a brand, because that's what their dad/mom, family, or sibling had; what they are used to. |

Yes sir. I just sold my 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 diesel and am in the process of finalizing my order on a 2017 Ram 3500 diesel as I love the I6 Cummins. Have previously owned Fords and GMs, all of the big three make a great truck. Toyota and Nissan are worth a look too for lighter duty.
Re toy trucks like the Ram Rebel, they're a lot of fun and it sounds like you can get one for a good deal. I have to say the 2017 Ford Raptor is THE one to go for in the segment (off road toy trucks) though it'll cost you fair chunk more. It's a great desert runner. The Ram 2500 Power Wagon is also a ton of fun and the ing of pickups on more technical trails with it's crazy articulation. Feel free to ask me anything and everything about trucks. |

I have also had an F150 and a Silverado and just no. I like the looks and performance of the Rams better. Plus MUCH easier to mod for some power in my experience. My father in law was a ford guy for 40 years, literally has only ever driven ford trucks, specifically diesel. He took one ride in my old 2500, and the next day he went to the dealer and got himself a 3500 Longhorn with the extended bed. He has not looked back. Sold his F-250 for a loss to do it too.

You guys are the best. Seriously. I really appreciate it. Looks like it should be a good deal then. I will definitely come back with more questions, but at a first glance it seems that you guys are giving it the blessing.

Also the raptor is quite a bit more expensive. The one I'm looking at has the V8 hemi and lots of options. Sticker is $57 and they're taking 10k off. Might be worth it to wait until Labor Day.
It also has an 8 speed auto which has pretty good reviews. The resale on these things isn't too bad either. Hard to find a lightly used one for much less. |

I agree with the poster that mentioned people usually get whatever the family had. In my case we've had pretty much every iteration of the Toyota truck. I currently have a '12 Tundra and it's solid as a rock. Honestly though I don't think you can go wrong with any truck.
Though I don't buy trucks as toys. I actually use them for their intended purpose. If you wanted a toy those raptor things look pretty neat. |

Hi OP, I think i am missing something but isn't the ram "power wagon" a 0-60 in 9s kind of car? How is that a toy and how is that credible to call a "power wagon"? An e63s wagon is a "power wagon"
If I were to get a truck as a toy I would get a raptor to jump stuff in the desert or a used ram srt10 with the 6mt and viper v10 engine (I saw one for $18k with 60k miles recently). 0-60 in 5-6s is still too slow for a "toy" but it's better than what you were thinking about, in my humble opinion |

I've owned a '96 ram 1500 4x4 since Oct. 1995. I have around 120K miles on it. It's been an OK truck. Only a couple of significant repairs during ownership. Pretty red paint went to shit after 4 years or so (as they all did). Abysmal gas milage with the 383.

Do not buy the 6 cylinder turbo disel ram. It's a fiat motor one of the worst you can have. My brother has a 2016 ram 5.7 v8, and he loves it. He had a 2012 5.7 before and he didnt have any problems at all. They are really reliably if you go with 5.7 L.
And if you plan on pulling stuff do not go with Toyota, that thing got no power my cousin used to have one, for his construction company he had to pull a trailer 18 feet. He said the truck will go throw gas like crazy and no power at all. He ended up going with ram.

I see what you are saying. However, when I think of "toy" and a truck I do not think of going fast. I think of an off-road crawler or a toy to pull the camper with or something to jack up and get all the luxury goodies. I am from the South and lived there most of my life, so when I think of "toy" that is what comes to mind. Not saying that is the only definition, but that is why I assume that he did not mean simply go fast.

Go for it. The 5.7L Hemi and 8 speed trans are an excellent combo. My father has a 2013 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L Hemi. Has almost 100k miles on it and tows a twin axle dump trailer every other weekend. Runs great.
I also like the Chevys, but seems my friends with newer Silverados have all had some kind of transmission problem.

There are lots of trim packages when it comes to trucks. Don't discount the Japanese trucks either... They make some pretty bad ass looking Toyota tacomas
There are just tons of options out there. Oh and chevolet and gmc do offer a 6.2l v8 in a half ton truck that still get decent gas mileage. |
