Proprietary Blends - Yes or No?

Couldn't find a specific thread on this, but many folks bash due to lack of transparency. I personally think it's all subjective and if a blend works well for you, then it's cool. If not, then you move to a different product or create your own to control the "optimal" dose.

I can see both sides of the story and understand why the stances are taken. What are your thoughts on this?

I never buy proprietary blends because I like to know exactly what amounts of ingredients are in my supplements. I personally don't see the need to hide the amounts in a blend, except the obvious reason of under dosing key ingredients.

I quit buying proprietary blend stuff. It's a waste of money most times. You are usually buying cheap filler ingredients that allow them to jack up the price for no good reason. While I think that the FDA really is corrupt and full of crap most times, the supplement market does give creedence to the reason why some FDA regulations exist. It was BS that 1,3 DMAA was banned, and it pissed me off when ephedrine was banned for weight loss pills. I don't care if people use whatever, but for me, I choose to only use what I recognize with dosages that I approve of. Most blends don't have enough of the doses you need anyways. Except for caffeine...most go overboard with it.

Yeah, I can definitely understand that, which is why I posed the question in the first place. It's interesting because I use BSN for pre/post supplementation, and have gotten great results with their stuff even though they employ minimal ingredient transparency. I considered ON, JYM, and now there are newer brands out that bash the proprietary mixtures, but I guess I just never cared enough for it to truly make that much of a difference to me. Supplements are just that: supplements.

Stick with JYM and ON. Great clean providers. There's no magic in propriety blends. But it could be harmful.

There's something more to name brand's then just the active ingredients.

Although not related to supplements, back in high school, I used Acne Medicine. The Nuetrogena version of the same product worked way better than the Stop and Shop or Walmart Brand, with the same active ingredients.

While this may not be the case with Aspirin or Ibuprofen, there is some "magic" in proprietary ingredients, sometimes.

you need to know what is being put into your body, Jym and On are the best products. granted not everything is great for you but wise choices are a must. I like to know the ingredients as well.

I feel like whatever works for the user is fine. This is purely subjective, as I have had no adverse effects from using BSN and my performance has improved exponentially, despite the proprietary bitching. To each his/her own.

to each their own, but down the line what are the long term effects? it may effect someone in different ways. BSN is well known, but some companies that are fairly new I would be a bit skeptical
