E30 Project car ??

Hey guys ... as a lot of you have seen from my posts I come from a background where my experience is with mostly Japanese cars. I have wanted to build a track car / drift car for a while (something I can take out and drive hard and if I run off track Im not going to be upset about like I would if it was my E90). While looking at 240sx I thought about the E30 as I really like the styling and have yet to see really any E30 drift cars.

My questions are as follows:

1) for the e30 are their place that offer a lot of suspension components? (ie. camber plates, control arms, coilovers bushings, ect)

2) do people do engine swaps on the E30? such as can you throw a E46 M3 motor in one? or any other factory BMW motor that offer more power?

3) anyone have any input on this idea? am I being dumb? should I just get a typical S13 instead?

1. i would think the market is small because the demand is very low

2. engine swaps in E30s have been done, but it is rare. it works though . one person swapped the S54 motor into the E30. i'll post a link of his blog ish kinda thing when i find it.

3. no you are not crazy. E30s have been in rally before, and they're fun little cars. i would think it would make a fun drifter/track car too. the market is just low for mods. S13/14s are much higher in demand.S13s and S14s would probably make better drift cars too! Don't forget that the S14 in the states would require a motor swap though. don't want to be using a truck engine

i hope you do it man. E30s are cooooool! I saw an E30 325i at an autox event. it didn't do as well as many of the cars but it held its own for the power it was putting out

I think a better dedicated track/autox car would be a e36 m3. Out of the box i think it drives very well and is good enough to track. It also has a lot of aftermarket support since its not TOO old. Only downside is they can be pricey.

Im really thinking about going with this route. The 335 is extremely heavy for track. It does have the power, but i feel like im dragging the car along. In small tight courses, my e92 gets passed with ease by underpowered light weight cars. Plus, like you said, if any damages occur, its going to cost a LOT to get repaired.

1. if you look around hard enough.... you'll find everything you need

2. a lot of people that do engine swaps on E30s mostly do S52s.... i think it'll definately be a beast if you were to do that (especially if its a dedicated track car).

3. i think its a great idea especially if you can find one for the right price. its all up to you and how much you're willing to spend on the car. just like lawrence said, i would probably look into an E36 M3 also...

+1 on the e36 idea. its a great car out of the box and its fairly light weight. and most people think that it could be one of the best handling bmw ever..
