Greetings,

First, I have used the search function and have read a lot of post about purchasing an extended warranty through BMW or going with USAA's warranty coverage.

I currently drive a 2014 BMW 328ix Drive with the Msport package and currently have 40,000 miles on it. The car will need new tires in about 1,500 miles or so. This car has been really good to me and never gave me any issues besides having to do the normal maintenance, oil change, and brake pads being replaced. I currently live in Watertown, NY and the closest repair shop is in Syracuse, NY, which is about 45 min - 60 min away.

What would y'all recommend I do? Should I get new tires? Second, should I sell the car? Third, get an extended warranty?

Please help me decide which would be best. It snows a lot up here is what I have been told but I lived in Germany for a few years and did not mind the snow.

Based purely on the fact that it's a 328i x-drive, sell it.

I originally purchased my car in Germany. The closest dealership is in Syracuse and I will be using it for maintenance, etc.

As for it being a 328ix drive, it has saved me a few times in Austria when I would go snowboarding for the weekend. I am not after a fast car as I cannot drive any car fast here to its abilities without getting a ticket. Track wise it's a hit and miss and no drag racing. I do miss my gtr 35 that I sold in Germany.

I second this, however if you like the car, selling it just because it needs tires is kind of ridiculous. Just put tires on it. Is the issue you can't afford new tires?

Having a two year old car that will soon need tires so you are considering selling it? Seems crazy.

I would buy new tires and keep driving it. I also don't believe in extended warranties or selling a car just because the warranty will expire soon. Extended warranties come with hassles and costs and the companies that sell them make a lot of money on them.

Selling it and buying another car just trades a possible out of pocket repair with a guaranteed high depreciation hit.

The tires are not the issue as I am ready to order them. Just trying to find justification to get rid of it due to the winter I have been told about. Was going to sell it and pay the difference for a 2016 Land Rover. I asked about the extended warranty due to this is my first car I actually kept until 40,000 miles. I usually sell my cars at 25,000 miles or less. The BMW has been a good car but I do miss my GTR35, Porsche Cayman R, and lastly my Porsche Cayenne. All have been sold but not forgotten. So it seems 2 agree I sell it. A few others say to skip the extended warranty.

I have about a month or less to keep or purchase another vehicle.

OP, people have been living in upstate New York for centuries, let alone modern times with automobiles. There was a time not long ago where upstate New Yorkers actually drove rear-wheel drive Detroit iron with heavy font weight bias, and most all of them survived.

But seriously, New York state does an excellent job in keeping the roads clear in winter, and your x-drive 3-series will do just fine. It sounds like you are looking for an excuse to get a new car. If you don't keep cars past 25,000 miles (barely 2 oil changes in a BMW - LOL) then why are you asking us? And just lease a car if you only keep them 25,000 miles. Your E90 will easily pass 200,000 miles with hardly any problems, but you sound like a person that wants to have a trouble-free car and just make a car payment every month, so just go lease what you want.

And a set of snow tires on a winter tire package (i.e. extra rims) is far less expensive than buying a new Range Rover. Just sayin'

Efthreeoh, I was trying to find an excuse to purchase a new car or SUV. I prefer a trouble free car since I pay in full at the time of purchase for a car. This is my first BMW I have ever owned; my buddies drive M3's-M6's. I just wanted a decent grocery getter while I am here in upstate New York with an AWD setup or a 4x4. So I have decided on purchasing a SUV. Jeep Grand Cherokee? Range Rover? Audi SQ5? BMW X6?

An extended warranty doesn't equal a "trouble free" car, it just means you do not pay for the repairs directly. The car still breaks and you still have the hassle of taking it to a mechanic to get repaired.

Also, you are hedging your bets that the cost of repairs, over the time the warranty is in effect, are more than the price paid for the warranty, which through any logic review tells you otherwise. All warranty companies make a profit and are in business; if in every case the cost of repairs exceeded the price paid for the warranty, the warranty companies would soon be out of business. The extended warranty business is nothing different than the insurance business, where actuary tables are used to calculate the price of the policy biased in favor of the insurance company.

What you are saying is you want to only own a vehicle during the time it statistically has the least amount of breakdowns (it's called mean-time-between-failures), which is why I suggested leasing rather the buying and re-selling every two years. It would be financially better for you to make a minimum car payment (i.e. lease payment) every month rather than tie up $50,000 dollars in a vehicle purchase, where you could invest the capital not spent on the vehicle purchase.

My point about upstate New York is the roads are very well maintained in winter, and a SUV is not a necessary option to get around in. Actually a BMW 3-series with x-drive is a very good snow vehicle since it has a lower center of gravity and less weight than an SUV, which aids in its winter driving dynamics.

I thought total BMW warranty was a total, factory plus CPO, of 6yr/100,000, are you there yet? You stated that your car was 2014, how can you be out of warranty
