BMW Motorsport Announce Drivers for Nordschleife Campaign
Published March 16 2015

BMW Motorsport today announced the drivers who will take part in the opening round of the VLN on the 28th of March, where BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS will compete with two BMW Z4 GT3s.
"We're convinced that with BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS and BMW Sports Trophy Team Schubert, as well as our outstanding driver line-up, we are in an excellent position for the endurance season on the Nurburgring-Nordschleife," said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. "Our team has a mix of old-hands and young talent, who all have experience of the Nordschleife, are familiar with GT racing and are fast even in difficult conditions. With this combination we are ready for success in the special challenges that the Nordschleife has in store once again in 2015."

The two BMW teams will start the VLN season with some of the most experienced drivers on the Nordschleife. This track is like a second home to Lucas Luhr (DE), Jorg Muller (DE), Dirk Muller (DE), Dirk Werner (DE), Dirk Adorf (DE) and Claudia Hartgen (DE). They have all celebrated countless victories there. The other drivers Jens Klingmann (DE), Markus Palttala (FI), winner of the 2014 BMW Sports Trophy, Alexander Sims (GB), Dominik Baumann (AT) and Nick Catsburg (NL) also have a vast experience of GT racing and the Nordschleife. Richard Westbrook (GB), who has been an established name in international GT racing for many years, makes his debut in the BMW Z4 GT3.

Also, four BMW DTM drivers, notably reigning champion Marco Wittmann (DE), are in action for the VLN and the qualifying races. Augusto Farfus (BR) celebrated overall victory in the 24-hour race with BMW Motorsport in 2010, Maxime Martin (BE) won the heart of fans with strong performances in the Eifel in the past. Martin Tomczyk (DE) and Wittmann have also contested many successful races on the Nurburgring-Nordschleife and are looking to add to their success rate on this track.

"I'm looking forward to getting the season on the Nordschleife underway," reckoned Bas Leinders, BMW Sports Trophy Team Marc VDS team principal. "We see that BMW Motorsport have once again assembled a strong squad to attack the Nordschleife this season. This campaign is important to Marc VDS and to BMW, and that's clear from the drivers they've announced here. We know the BMW Z4 GT3 is a fantastic weapon for this kind of racing, we showed that with victories last year, and I hope we can prove that again in 2015."

The teams' exact line ups will be released at a later date.

BMW Motorsport welcomes Richard Westbrook in the driver line-up for the VLN season opener on 28th March on the Nordschleife

Honda Accord gets a bit squirrely around 1:02.
Lots of BMW's one that (I think) is drifting. The Golf tries to, spins then drives off slowly hoping no one saw it.

and then we get to 2:20. Poor 1'er.

This is from the VLN test day recently. The chrome SLS AMG is sick

MarcVDS Z4 GT3 around 30 seconds in. the 0:46 seconds in is - I forget the BMW team. They are at 2:15 along with MarcVDS again. and then I think it's either Bonk or Sorg right around 2:44.
The Maserati at 1 minute looks sinister.

I dont like the blue/yellow livery on the Aston Martin, but I would still drive it haha

R8, Ferrari, Mercedes, the BMW Z4 GT3 hard on the throttle. SLS again, another 458 and then another SLS - the chromed livery is popular again this year. Then we have a 911 that sounds really good, then the Black Falcon Porsche and a 3rd Porsche. The lime green TTRS looks nice. Finally a silver TTRS with a green wing and finally the ugly TTRS from Møller Bil Motorsport. Sorry, a dull purple/red/grey does not a stiking car make!

If you're not already, this onboard in a Porsche GT3 should get you excited for this upcoming season!!

MarcVDS iRacing the Z4 GT3 haha ... pass that Porsche!!

Words cannot describe how much I hate VLN. As a spectator it may well be fabulous but to have to run a car in it is just about the worst experience I have ever had lol.

DMSB Press Release;

"DMSB resolves security measures for Nordschleife
The Bureau of the DMSB (German Motor Sport Association) decided at a special meeting extensive safety measures for the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. "This includes a reduction of benefits for some categories of vehicles, as well as a kind of 'speed limit' in certain sections," said DMSB President Hans-Joachim Stuck. "In addition, some spectator areas are not initially accessible to the usual extent." This is to ensure a safe racing until the prosecutor closed the investigation after the fatal accident on the last weekend in March and more DMSB own investigations are carried out. Prior to the decision of the Bureau DMSB an expert panel of representatives from the racetrack operator of the automobile manufacturer, from professional racers and recreational athletes, the organizers and DMSB safety and technical experts in Frankfurt had met to work out solutions. "All parties agreed that everything must be done to prevent accidents in which viewers can come to harm," says Stuck. "Now we have adopted measures that allow short course competition again - albeit to a limited extent. At the same time sets the DMSB up an expert committee to develop medium-term solutions, which will then be implemented as soon as the racing season. This could also include comprehensive regulation changes as possible construction. "

Specifically, the following actions are planned for the immediate implementation: The vehicles of the top classes are slowed by the engine power is reduced by five percent. In order to prevent a dangerous lifting, the speed at critical sections airfield, Sweden Cross and Antoniusbuche must be reduced. This is done by each of several hundred meters in front of these sections is considered a top speed of 200 km / h (at the Döttinger height of 250 km / h). This is - similar to warning signals through the 'yellow flag' - controlled by GPS and has tough penalties for violations. After passing the pace zone may be accelerated again, so that the vehicles with their individual speed drive on the critical areas. Since the acceleration is reduced, the vessels at the sections airfield, Sweden Cross and Antoniusbuche with a significantly slower rate than previously. Simultaneously, a sudden braking is excluded.

In addition, in the sections airfield, Sweden Cross, Metzgesfeld and planting the garden some parts of the audience area will initially be only limited access, to enable structural changes again to access these areas. The temporary ban on the hitherto suspended vehicle classes SP7, SP8, SP8T, SP9, SP-Pro, SP-X and Cup-2, the GT classes of H4, the E1-XP1, E1-XP2 and E1-XP Hybrid on the Nürburgring Nordschleife participate in DMSB approved racing events, has been canceled.

"With the agreed package of measures planned in the coming weeks on the Nordschleife events can take place first. At the same time DMSB is especially keep on racing in mind and looking at a commission of experts for suitable measures intended to enable the safe and fair racing on the Nordschleife in the coming years, "said Hans-Joachim Stuck.:

Hi,

To my opinion they made the right decision to continue the sport and take necessary actions after the fatal accident.

Well.. I'm glad to hear that the GT3 class of cars will be racing. But what kind of a race will it be - when you impose speed limits on a race track. Might as well introduce - fuel economy standards too.

Speed Limits set:

Döttinger Höhe straight - 250kmh
Antoniusbüche - 200kmh
Flugplatz - 200kmh
Schwedenkreuz - 200kmh

Restricted spectator viewing at:

Flugplatz
Schwedenkreuz
Metzgesfeld
Pflanzgarten

I think what Dale(BtG) wrote is write on the money!

The first experience with the new safety measures introduced at the Nordschleife has been gained. On occasion of the Qualification Race for the ADAC Zurich 24h Race, most of the provisions adopted to improve safety at the Eifel circuit turned out to be feasible. After a debriefing with the teams and the drivers, the DMSB has nevertheless taken action and upgraded some details of the conditions in co-ordination with the VLN and the ADAC Nordrhein.

The speed limit applicable in the pit lane for example has now been set from 30 km/h to 50 km/h. Moreover, the zone in the area Döttinger Höhe in which the maximum speed of 250 km/h is in force has been extended from marshal post 200 to post 200a.
