Bingo. They're cutting prices to crush the competition from shale, many of whom will fold with prices below $80 for a sustained period.

That being said, I paid $3.49 for 93 at the cheapest place in town last Friday...

Well, part of it is that oil is priced in USD, the dollar is/was on a strengthening trend, and oil companies are cutting prices to try to get foreign economies to buy up/compete with shale, but the result is that it is cheaper for USA.

Since last year, almost a $0.50 drop across the US, with the Gulf Coast still having the lowest average prices at ~$2.50/gal for regular.

Just got 93 for $2.28 at speedway in Michigan. (Super low for here, we are usually above the national average because of being a peninsula and all)

I bet the economy is doing very well now with all the gas prices being dropped. Less money spent on fuel means more money for the consumer and less money spent for products for a business.
