Need a Winter Car!
So with winter and snow approaching, I need something that can handle the snow. Yes, I've heard the M3 with snow tires is fine in the snow, but I'd rather have something AWD. The cars I'm looking into are:
Audi S4/S6/TTRS (2012+) Subaru WRX STi sedan Mitsubishi Evo MR Anyone have experience with these, or have better suggestions? I don't want an SUV or something slow as I'll probably keep this car and drive year-round in it. |

having owned a Subaru WRX STI, you will be disappointed 10months out of the year that you don't have your M3. I live in a pretty snowwy region, and I got by just fine when I had my 335i with snows. I can't speak to Audi's lineup, but if I were you stick with the M3 and get some Blizzaks.

I realize that the STI is going to be fantastic, but I see you have a TTRS on your list. I'd DEFINITELY get that car! The soundtrack alone is incredible.

I've lived in New England my entire life and can count the number of days with snow actually covering the roadways each year on a single hand. Buying a car based on those five days makes less sense than wearing a rain coat every single day of the year.
I should also add that the best car I've ever driven in the snow was my tuned 135i with snows. It was stable, predictable, and unstoppable! Dunlop Wintersport is also the best snow tire I've ever used. STIs also feel quite tinny and cheap coming from anything German.

I bought a Golf R for winter use this year. Great little car for winter and DD.
It's got enough power, AWD, really nice interior and plenty of room. |

The S4 is a great vehicle for the snow, it's a blast to drive and it's reliable. (I believe the used B7 S4s are going for around $23-$28K with relatively low miles. )
The WRX STi has a cheap feel to it, and they're not worth the money IMHO.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. I loved my STI and it is a hoot to daily. I also love my 335 but even fbo pro tuned it feels sedate in comparison.

I'm in the camp of considering an Audi A4/S4 as a winter beater.

+1 My vote the OP.. AWD what?? But I respect your decisions even if it maybe blasphemy to the M Gods.... My vote S6, S4 or similar. The STI or EVO or great cars but aren't cars I would want long term, due to a lack of "Refinement". Last edited by DocWeatherington; 12-08-2014 at 02:58 PM.. |

My 135 with Blizzaks on is great as my winter car. I am thinking of replacing it with the S3. Gaining 2 doors and AWD. I would look into that if you do not need the interior space of the S4.

Any one of the Audi would be better than the Japanese options. My friend lend me his Evo and another lend me his STI and I hated it. Don't get me wrong they are great cars but once you drive Germany everything else feels so different.
