"For the experience."
Famous last words. What is the "experience" you're expecting to get out of this? Something doesn't add up... I would never want some stranger kid staying in my house for free, and I would have to pay to feed them? Nope...

When I lived in Holland, I was on the other side of this scenario: I was the student being hosted. The family was a complete 180 of my family, and lived in a small apartment somewhere on the outskirts of Paris. They fed me sandwiches with cold fries. I will never forget it.

Let me tell you this. I know sex/porn stuff are joke, but I assure you that there will be no porning going on.
I've known students and families who hosted intl' student, and they even rarely see each other. Intl' student will be busy hanging out with friends to learn eng/HW etc. |

A friend's neighbor used to serve as a foster parent -- usually had 3 kids in the house. One year they hosted a Russian exchange student. Cute girl, too wholesome. That family did it strictly for the money and their house was the epitome of white trash. The student spent most of her time at my buddies house. No, he didn't bang her.
Point is, they always got paid for this kind of stuff. Would I host if I had to cover the cost of another mouth and likely clean up after them? Hell no. Now, my SIL hosts college kids and post-grads who come to Vanderbilt for a semester or so. They pay rent and it's always worked out well. Much different situation though. |

Don't do it.
Wasn't a foreign exchange student but my SO's cousin lived with us for a year from Germany. Object was to learn better English and his was fine already. All he did was upset our life style, take over my house and make a mess everywhere, but he was family or I'd have thrown his ass out. First off his intention was to get his personal training license and not learn anything, basically lied to his parents. His personal habits were beyond tolerable, most notable he spent 2 hours preparing a meal of which he had 4 daily, he would use the whole kitchen and my house is 3K sq ft so the kitchen is not tiny. He would do laundry in 4 or 5 diffrent loads some with only 2 things in each load, showered 3 times a day because he went to the gym for 4 hours a time sometimes twice a day, wasted water like no tomorrow(bill went from $70 a month to $94 consistently for the year he was there). Went out late, would have online chats with people middle of the night (1 to 2 AM) when I had to go to work next day. Was just a real pita and no I did not get paid but he did have to buy his own groceries sort of. Was not worth the hassle IMO. |
