Yes the Japanese did commit some heinous war crimes, but even if there was a Nazi soldier hiding out somewhere in France I would still have respect for the dedication. Those horrible acts weren't committed by every member of that military. Many Nazi soldiers didn't agree with what happened to the Jews and I'm sure the same happened with the Japanese. Even if this Japanese solider did commit those acts, the fact that he survived all that time is amazing and he has earned respect for just that. Maybe its something you have to have served to fully understand, but he wasn't just some serial killer hiding in the woods for 20+ years.

No one celebrates the fact that he killed people outside of a war time environment. But rather celebrate the level of dedicated service to his country. They celebrate his patriotism, nothing else.

People should try to expand their perspective.

That said, the natives who were affected by this man's actions have every right to oppose his return visit and denounce his actions. The flip side of that is that the Japanese people view him as having tremendous love, respect and loyalty to his country and his emperor.
What he said. It takes a LOT of dedication towards your country, and loyalty to your fellow service members to stay out there for 20 years until your CO tells you to finally stop.

You consider those willing to sacrifice themselves for a cause cowards. One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. I suspect its always been that way.
I agree.

George Washington was a Traitor and Terrorist as far as The British Empire was concerned. He was a Patriot and Hero as far as the US is concerned.

Nobody would call George Washington a coward. He was a very brave man according to the British and the Americans as well as us Canadians.

Being brave or being a coward is different than fighting for a cause that may be wrong.

The only difference is the GW did not go to England and try and kill them, he fought it principles on his own ground.

If you were to apply today's standard, George Washington would have been considered a terrorist.

Well yes and no, I think most people equate the word terrorist, with those willing to strike terror into a population, with no holds barred, even through civilian attacks. George Washington didn't launch attacks on civilians, that is the difference between a freedom fighter and terrorist in my opinion...
