It should be. If you make all the connections beforehand it makes it a bit more difficult to start, especially if the source battery has aged. This is because once the cables are fully connected you have both batteries tied together and the stronger will be trying to charge the weaker. Then when you try cranking the source engine there won't be as much current available.

In response to BK's question on April 7, it doesn't matter as much if the third connection (black to source) is to the frame or to the battery post but it's safer to go to the frame. The procedure I outlined is the way I was taught, including the safety aspects.
