So my sister's Accord just died...

My sister has a 2000 Honda Accord Ex and this has happened a few times already. While driving, the car would slow down and just shut down completely. Like the engine dies and the lights in the dashboard light up. WTF? We just start the engine right back up and it drives like normal again. I have taken the car to 10+ mechanics and no one can put a finger on what's wrong. This is crazy when the car just dies all of a sudden. The only warning I think we get is the car will vibrate a lot more then usual and that means the car is about to shut down? Any ideas before I take it to another mechanic? Is there anything specific I can ask them to check? Maybe something electrical? The last time we had something fixed for this was the idle.

Even though this sounds very much like that well-known problem with BMW e9x, which would just shut down because of loss of battery power while driving (some believe that the recent battery connector recall is supposed to address that issue), I think you will have much better luck asking this in a Honda [Accord]-specific forum.

The battery was just replaced last week. This has happened a few times and it's scary not knowing when or why the car will just stop and shut down. Just looking for ideas to ask the mechanic. I tried the Honda forums, but not getting much help.

Friends old 1998(?) accord did the same thing. Ended up being the ignition and replaced it. Think he also replaced the alternator and battery too.

Guaranteed either the main relay or ignition mechanism.

Have you checked the head gasket. Tell tale sign is the shudder before stall out (water leaking into the combustion chamber)

The fact that it starts right back up tells me it's not electrical. Those cars use caveman ECU's, as long as you have spark, fuel and air that engine will run

Water in the gas tank? Long shot but it won't hurt to check.

Thanks guys, sounds like it might be an ignition or relay problem? I'll ask this week. Any ideas what price range this should cost?

Check air intake tubing for cracks. Cracks are sealed When Cold. When engine heats up crack opens and the get engine sputter and stall/shutdown.

When the car died, we just put in back to the "P" position and start it right back up, no problems. So I would think it's not really an ignition problem? A few others have told me it's an electrical issue? I'm not sure if this matters, but the few times this has happened, the weather is usually pretty hot.

I've had the ignition issue like some have mentioned with my old Acura Integra. Basically, the ignition switch had become so worn that the key would sometimes turn on its own from the On position to the Accessory position causing the engine to shutdown while driving. Your mention of the car vibrating before it stalls makes it sound more like a mechanical issue than an electrical one though.

Def not, this is def sign of an electrical issue. The fact that it does die and starts right back up fine shows that it IS electrical. Esp the fact that the lights do crazy stuff inside the car. I work for a company that works on hondas, and I have seen main relays and ignition mechanisms go out countless times with those exact symptoms. Not saying I'm 100 percent right, but I'd put money on it being electrical.

Check to make sure there is no dirt or anything else in the gas tank/fuel system.

Lol...I took it in to a shop that only specializes on Hondas and described the issue with them as best I can. The guy told me I had to schedule an appointment for a complete diagnosis and it would cost 90 bucks. I left and said I'll think about it since I had to leave the car there all day. I don't know, is it worth it to get this diagnosis?
