Never heard of it. Never seen the sticker on the DVD player saying -- Use it only with LCDs...

The sampling out of the DVD player is at Fs rate and both, LCD and Plasma simply upconvert it to the same rate (and freq) for the output, therefore, I don't see it as an issue...looking from the engineering perspective. It could be an issue with that specific unit, or connection. But, FCC makes sure that if the "X" DVD player works with latest LCD TVs, it should with the latest Plasmas too.

Just my opinion...
Uh, no, that's not at all what I'm saying. My point was that the electronics in TVs are very different from model to model, brand to brand and technology to technology. LCD presents a poor signal very differently than a plasma. And, it is feasible that your LCD will upconvert flawlessly, while his plasma doesn't, particularly if they are a different brand. The FCC has nothing to do with how a set processes the signal. A set simply has to be physically capable of HD resolution to be considered an HD set. There was a published test last year (I forget the mag) of almost every popular "HD" Plasma, DLP and LCD set on the market. You might be suprised that fewer than 1/2 were actually capable of presenting a true HD picture (720p). Most presented the picture as 720i, meaning only 360 lines of information were presented on the screen at one time, even though the screen was physically capable 720 lines of resolution and could legally be termed an HD set.

Panasonic plasma's do not use the best upconversion electronics... Pioneer, Fujitsu, and others are much better... but Panasonic tend to have the most accurate picture at their price point and were one of the few that passed the above test with every '05 - '06 model displaying true 720p HD.

Guys, I tested it out with my buddy's DVD player which is Progressive Scan, and the picture looks great. Thanks for all the input.

Oppo 971 includes DVI & HDMI cables in the box.
Oppo 971 is a great deck! Congrats.

The best TVs on the market are still plasma. The Panasonic VT is currently tops. The Pioneer Kuro was the best but they pulled out of the business and all of their employees and technology were taken over by Panasonic.

It's a serious thread bump, but read all of the posts. Some of them are pretty hilarious. $130 for an HDMI cable.

I still have my kuro elite. it's awesome. Still the best tv available today for blacks and true color. The new sony 4k is pretty damn nice tho but nothing in 4k yet.

Panny cant come close to the kuro even tho they have the technology.

Kuro hasn't been available for several years so it's kind of pointless to discuss it but look into the new Panny ZT series. They seem to have finally beaten, or at least matched, the Kuro for black levels. I can't possibly get my room dark enough to notice the difference but I currently have a Panny GT that is phenomenal.
