I want to find some nice trails in the Tri-State area... possibly up in Connecticut. Anyone know of any nice scenic trails? Also, I may be in the market to buy a bike as well. Any recommendations?

What kind of riding are you looking to do and how much are you willing to spend? I always reccommend getting a hardtail bike if it is your first. It will teach you to take the proper lines in a trail and is easier to climb in. You can get into an entry level hardtail for about $900-$1100. An entry level full suspension bike will run you atleast $1500 or more.

Trek, Cannondale, Specializied and Gary Fisher are some decent companies to look at. If you got some real $$$ to spend look into Turner or Ventana for a full suspension. Scott makes some really nice hardtail bikes as well.

I'm actually looking for more of a hybrid bike. A mountain bike with some road bike characteristics? Can I get something decent around $400? Maybe I should be look for used ones?

Yes used is always a good way to go. You may find a decent bike that's older and has little use. If you do go that route. Take it into a shop and have them tune it up. Hybrids are ok for commuting. But the geometry isn't very good for anything other than riding around the city.

I used to ride my mountain bike around NYC/Brooklyn all the time. It was great, I was able to ride down stairs as well, but the cops in the subways didn't like that.

Brands that are OK are GT,Diamondback and Fuji. You will sacrifice quality and weight though. An I wouldn't do anything crazy (high jumps/drops) on these brands. The frame welds may break and you could hurt yourself pretty badly.

Invest in a helmet as well. I busted my ass once and almost got ran over by an MTA bus in Brooklyn. Late last year I broke my arm and was knocked unconcious on one of the local trails. In both instances my helmet was busted up pretty badly and really saved my head.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll look into those brands. I don't think I'll be doing anything too crazy... Probably mostly paved roads and dirt paths with not too many obstacles. I'll be going with my gf, so I wouldn't want to endanger her.
