Guys, what's up with the safety ratings on our older 3 series. NHSTA & IIHS don't rank them very high until the '12 model. Most newer family cars rank a lot higher. IIHS has a rollover rating giving strength in pounds and a strength to weight ratio. Here are some examples to put things in perspective.


'12 (new) Passat is ranked #1. 6.32 ratio. 20,592#.
(Wife's) '08 C300 is 5.36 ratio. 18,826#.
'12 Camry is 5.31 ratio. 17,588#.
'12 Civic is 5.85 ratio. 15,665#.
'09-'12 Corolla is 5.09 ratio. 14,000#.
E90 3 series is 3.91 ratio. 13,301#.
'12 Altima is 3.79 ratio. 12,111#.
My Daily driver '08 MKZ is 3.33 ratio. 11,300#.

I drive a lot for work and personal use. About 30k/yr. Here I am driving my '08 Lincoln MKZ thinking it's a super safe car. I just had a baby and started looking into recalls, safety etc just to get caught up on a few things and feel like I got learned. My Wife's '08 C300 Ranks top of the list in Luxury midsize cars. Only car I see that beats it is the new Passat which is in the regular mid size car class. I'm seriously questioning the safety of both my cars... daily driver mkz and weekend cruiser E90. Does anyone have some better insight as to what the real world safety is on our cars and what these ratings mean. Because I've had a brain fart to sell both and buy one newer, safer car and save a boat load of cash and time in the car dept.
