It has always interested me how the meanings of words are lost & change over time.

examples:

Artificial - This originally meant ‘full of artistic or technical skill’

Nice - This comes from the Latin ‘not to know’. Originally a ‘nice person’ was someone who was ignorant or unaware.

Awful - This meant ‘full of awe’ i.e. something wonderful, delightful, amazing. However, over time it has evolved to mean exactly the opposite.

Brave - this once was used to signify cowardice.

Manufacture - From the Latin meaning ‘to make by hand’ this originally signified things that were created by craftsmen. Now the opposite, made by machines.

Counterfeit - once meant a perfect copy. Now it means anything but.

Tell - Its original meaning was ‘to count’.



My predictions:
1. The "N-word" will mean 'buddy' or 'friend' and no longer be considered vulgar or hateful

2. "Literally" will mean the same thing as "actually" or just be used as a modifier to accentuate or stress a point. Hell, it's basically taken on that meaning already!

Well done! I think this has already changed!

In the future, interesting will mean having no excitement or generate zero interest, while the current definition is something of interest or excitement and holding someone's curiosity or attention.

"Special", "differently abled" and "challenged" will become just as offensive as "retarded", "crippled", and "idiot" or "moron". Those all use to be PC descriptive words. "Special" is well on its way.

Gay has meant a few things over 30 years. At first it meant happy; then it went to homosexual; now it often means something unacceptable. Weird but that's just the way of the world.
