People get confused.. 3 vs 5. Interesting conversation.
I went to window tinting shop today.
Shop: "Damn, never seen a white 5 before." Me: "excuse me?" Shop: "I said I never seen a white 5 series before. looks awesome!" Me: "thanks....... I love my 330" Shop: "Yeah, I love the new 5 series also. we tinted a black 525 yesterday. Now that I see a white one, I like the white better!" Me: "thanks.. 3 series and 5 series really do look similar, eh?" Shop: "Yeah. Doesn't that piss you off a little? I mean, you want people to know that you have a 5, not a 3. Not that Im saying 3 is bad or anything, I actually love the new 3s too. but you paid more for the 5 you know." Me: "yeah. they really do get confused. For instance, YOU. I say it again, mine is a 330i man." Shop: "........ oh... dude." Me: "Yeah. Hurry up and set me up for an appointment. I gotta go." Shop: "I am so sor.." Me: "Save it. Even I get confused." And supposively, they only deal with BMWs. Its a really good shop with good rep in town. The guy was really cool so I let it go. not that I should do anything about it even if he wasn't cool. Anyone of you had similar experience? Sad thing is, I get confused ALOT too whenever I see the front of the new 5 series.

I get that all the time. Especially when I first bought it. Usually it is in the form of a question. "Is that a 5 series?" or "That's a 5 , isn't it?"

wow, never heard that one before. to me, they look very different. i only sometimes confuse an older 7 series with older 5 series. but 3 and 5 have always been kind of distinct.

LOL. I had the same thing when a friend of mine from Panama was in The Netherlands last june. He rode with me and asked me why I drove a 5 series now instead of the 3 series I always had. He was very confused, couldn't blame him, the model was very new at that time.

Hell, that happened to me once. I thought I would never mistake one for the other, but I saw one in person from far away and my mom was like, "What's that?" And I told it her it was a 5er, then it turned and she read the badge lol

I've never had this come up, and don't get them confused myself. I think the overall shape of the cars are similar, but I know the differences in the front grill shape (3's is similar to the 6, sort of flat on top), and where the line/crease on the side of the car falls, through the door handle or above it... that's all I need to be able to say, there's a new 3 or new 5 and not get them mixed up.

I thought 3 and 5 is distinctively different also, until I realized I was keep on getting confused between 3 and 5.
just don't look at it carefully, you'll find them surprisingly similar. Quote:
They are having winter special right now(until 1/7/06). So I set one up on 1/4/06.

before the new 3 was really out on the road, I always did a double take at every new 5 on the road as I thought it was a 3
there's more in common between the 3 and 5 now than at any time before |

Well, if you mixed an e46 with an e60, one of its babies might look like the new e90. It has a similar dashboard layout (as in the 5-series), the headlights sort of slant upwards toward the edges (minus the silly eyebrows), the hood line cuts right above the enlarged kidney grills (like in the 5), and even the hood and side profile, and overall size look a bit more similar to the 5.

You can definitely see that they are part of the same family, but to me they are visually different, they both have a different presence on the road.
Was out furniture shopping yesterday and parked next to a new 5, and looking at both cars side by side front, rear and 3/4 views, you can definitely see the heritage, but (and I don't know if this was just the colour of the 5), the 3 looks more modern and fresh. You can see that their design thinking advanced quite significantly between the two cars. My friend was like "is that car another 3?" AARGH! I guess there are car people and then there is everyone else. I read somewhere that guys who really love cars have been shown to have impaired capability to recognice faces because they use that part of their brain to store stuff to recognise different models of cars. This was actually a real study done in the US. No wonder I have trouble recognising people now - j/k - LOL

Like I said, I thought I would be able to easily distinguish an E90 and an E60, but if you glance from a distance like I did, it's not that hard to mix them up.
