True or false.....how to save money at the pump
not sure if this is true, but its interesting to know
Fill up your car or truck in the morning when the temperature is still cool. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground; and the colder the ground, the denser the gasoline. When it gets warmer gasoline expands, so if you're filling up in the afternoon or in the evening, what should be a gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and temperature of the fuel (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products) are significant. Every truckload that we load is temperature-compensated so that the indicated gallonage is actually the amount pumped. A one-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for businesses, but service stations don't have temperature compensation at their pumps. If a tanker truck is filling the station's tank at the time you want to buy gas, do not fill up; most likely dirt and sludge in the tank is being stirred up when gas is being delivered, and you might be transferring that dirt from the bottom of their tank into your car's tank. Fill up when your gas tank is half-full (or half-empty), because the more gas you have in your tank the less air there is and gasoline evaporates rapidly, especially when it's warm. (Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating 'roof' membrane to act as a barrier between the gas and the atmosphere, thereby minimizing evaporation.) If you look at the trigger you'll see that it has three delivery settings: slow, medium and high. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to the high setting. You should be pumping at the slow setting, thereby minimizing vapors created while you are pumping. Hoses at the pump are corrugated; the corrugations act as a return path for vapor recovery from gas that already has been metered. If you are pumping at the high setting, the agitated gasoline contains more vapor, which is being sucked back into the underground tank so you're getting less gas for your money. Hope this will help ease your 'pain at the pump'.

Haha... I guess it could be true, even if it is marginal... Even Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear said so when he was doing an episode where he was trying to drive the Audi A8 for 800 miles on a single tank of diesel.

I thought someone posted this already saying it came "direct from his cousin" or something who works in the oil industry?
Edit: Ah, yes. Heres the thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81169 |

I think only one condition has to exist to negate the significance of what the OP says......you make minimum wage or higher.
I think it's like the old Philadelphia wives tale that our granpas told us...never buy a pretzel on a rainy day. He said they could not get the dough to rise on such a day so necessarily the pretzel sold is from the day before and reheated. Whether it's true or not again, is not consequential if you make minimum wage or higher.... |

That’s a pretty ignorant statement. People purchase what they can afford and/or what they like. I'll show a BMW owner the same respect I'd show a Honda owner. A car enthusiast is a car enthusiast in my opinion. Anyway about this thread.. Its not a question about being able to afford gas, but if its something as simple as the time of day when you fill up could save you some money why not? I agree with if the savings are minimal then its not worth going out of your way for.

Each of those tips could theoretically get you more gas for the money, but it's probably a few drops per tank max. You might as well give the nozzle a little shake before you yank it out to put another drop in. IMHO the savings aren't worth the effort.

I'm taking an educated guess and saying that the ground doesn't really change temperature on a daily basis at the depth the tanks are located. And any extremely small temp delta there would be would lead to an extremely insignificant difference in pumped fuel. For the first few inches of earth, maybe, but once you're down several feet, ground temp becomes very constant. That's why geothermal heating can work the way it does, and those pipes aren't buried that far down..

My hypothesis:
I think the OP is pumping too slow, extending the amount of time that he is exposed to inhale said gas vapors. This is leading to posting absolute nonsense such as the above information and should not be taken seriously.. j/k ska...

I don't really care too much about gas prices, cause I love to drive. That trumps the high prices to me. But if you are really serious about saving gas, the best way to do that is to car pool.
If you must drive here are a few pointers. 1. Drive at a steady pace, and gradually increase speed from a stop instead of stepping on it after every stop. 2. Keep your car free of anything that increases the weight to your car. So dirty trunks with junk in it, and back seats full of things that you don't need there is making your car use more gas. 3. Keep your tires inflated at the right psi (this is one of the most important and most neglected pointers) 4. Avoid spirited driving. The harder you step on the gas and the brakes continuously for long periods is the more gas you will burn. And finally don't waste your time buying those silly gadgets that profess 15% and 25% gas savings. Like most things in life, IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT USUALLY IS.
