2016 BMW M8 supercar speculation by Car and Driver
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com This was the last rumor prior to this one, where CAR also said the M8 project plans were firming up - http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=800282 What It Is: The BMW M8 is the first supercar from the blue-spinner crew since 1981, when the last of the 453 BMW M1s were sold. The M8 coupe will feature a few retro design cues, but also state-of-the-art gasoline-powertrain technology. The structure and body will use lightweight materials, such as carbon fiber, aluminum, magnesium, and even titanium, in pursuit of a 2760-pound target weight. Why It Matters: As BMW downsizes its mainstream models and introduces electric cars, it runs the risk of degrading its sporting image. A car like the M8 would burnish the reputation of BMW Motorsports. Platform: The new M8 will be built on the platform of the i8, a futuristic carbon-fiber plug-in hybrid that uses some 5-series components. Powertrain: An upgraded version of the M5's direct-injected 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo, coupled to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. BMW engineers are talking 600 to 650 horsepower. Competition: Audi R8, Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Porsche 911 Turbo. What Might Go Wrong: BMW boss Norbert Reithofer is not a fan of this car, but the head of BMW M GmbH, Friedrich Nitschke, is. The top boss could cancel the project at the last minute. The reason: The M8 doesn't strictly comply with BMW's 21st-century technology strategy, which focuses on alternative powertrains and smart connectivity. Estimated Arrival and Price: Due in BMW's centennial year of 2016, the M8's target price is 250,000 euros, or $330,000 at current exchange rates. http://www.caranddriver.com/features...17-future-cars |

I really really Dislike Car & Driver, though Road and Track's new format is horrible as well so...
But yeah, I'll give this a .01% chance of being anything near reality in 2016.

I don't see this happening. If we're talking about a 2016 model year, manufacturing has to be done soon and so far there is nothing being said about it. BMW has stressed that money is a primary concern and I don't see how stance has changed, so I'm in the "not happening" camp.

I have a bad feeling this won't be a fun car in any way, shape, or form. Character wise i think it will just be a really really fast M6 with different styling.

Doubt it. BMW just wants more sales, we will probably see a 1 series GT and 1 series Gran Coupe before any supercars.

Overpriced
I doubt BMW will target $350k it will be a tough sell. At $200k it might do well. Either way lets hope the weight saving tech trickles down to other M cars

I could see BMW making a halo car for the ///M division in more of a Motorsport sense but business case may overrule
While I don't think it would look anything like above especially because it looks like a sport model and not an M, BMW would and could make something more impressive than this headline grabber I do hope BMW makes an R8, R4, 918, 991 turbo, black series competitor that is priced right, light and monstrous/prodigious in power and noise There was mention of producing black series fighters so we could see something really cool come down the pipe. The hybrid and I focus is great in its own right , but the M crowd deserves, better and hope FN could make it happen |

Also don't forget what the competition is doing: see McClaren P1 "hybrid", new Ferrari flagship hyper car, Merc SLS, Audi R8, etc BMW has to be entertaining it even if it gets shot down before it goes full production. |

If this is true... Which i doubt it is, I hope it looks better than that render. It also should look good enough to stand next to the r8, which i'll admit is a gorgeous car
