People who loves driving, you might get used to this
When my friend and I were taking photo of this:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=831123 We saw a Chevrolet Volt was charging its battery, and the owner was sleeping inside the car... I don't know why he was doing this in the middle of the night, maybe he run out of battery and couldnt get home?! OR maybe its free for charge in there?! In my mind, when all petrol and diesel was used up, we all have to face this problem. Wasting time and Charging our car in somewhere which is not the destinations. |

that is odd, unless he is on a road trip and doesn't want to pay for a hotel, no reason why a charge at home is not enough for the day
it's a relatively new techonology, batteries will get better Last edited by amanda hor$t; 04-22-2013 at 03:54 AM.. |

OP, do you realize how many decades it will take to use up all the petroleum products in just this country alone?

I wonder if that guy knows the Volt also can run on gasoline when the battery is depleted (it uses the gas motor to run the electric one).
That alone is why I think the Volt is the most "today" ready of the EV's. It might only have a 40 mile electric range, but that's enough for most daily driving. The fact you have a gas engine to bail you out if you run out of juice is key.

Yes, but then you would have to look at it every day. Nothing is worth that much pain.

Assuming that this becomes more and more of the norm, we would need to start to see a more traditional car, and not things that look like that, for more and more people to consider them. I have a buddy who was looking at a new car and decided he needed some kind of hybrid, but that changed quickly when he realized that they mostly look gross.

I would suggest the Fusion, either hybrid or Energi PIH.

Yeah this is the tree hugger solution to the carbon foot print issue, stop using carbon fuel use electricity, but not realizing that coal fired power generation is worse than gas or diesel power cars. And it requires lots of time to top off your fuel source. This what happen when you let idiots and governments dictate solutions the solution is far worse than the problem.
There is a company is TX who is working on a Hydrogen powered super car, it does not use a fuel cell an convert H to Water and using electricity. It is a standard compression engine and burns H. so you can go to Hydrogen fueling station and you off and running again. This is the industry solution verse a Government solution. |

As mentioned, the Volt can drive fine on the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine). Had to burn some fuel in mine today when I went for a 40+ mile trip. 3.8 miles on fuel and the rest on the battery. I have it charging right now so no more fuel today. I even took it on a 1300 mile trip and still averaged 37+ MPG. At home though when my daily commute averages 20 - 25 miles, I only use the battery.
Less than half the energy produced today is generated by coal and that is dropping all the time. The CO2 output is less from coal fired plants versus the fuel burn in the Volt when you consider the extraction and refining of oil to fuel. That is often left out when comparisons are made. As for the person in the picture, must not want to pay for a room I suppose. Keep in mind that if that is a L2 hookup (240VAC), it almost certainly is, the climate control can be left on and the battery is still charging. Pretty uncomfortable though. And yes, the Volt is ugly but I could care less. It is a appliance that gets the weekly drive done to/from my office. I Then get to enjoy my M3 at Atlanta Motorsports Park. |

The problem with burning hydrogen in a conventional ICE, it is massively inefficient. GM had a Hummer H2 with a supercharged 6.0 liter V8 running on hydrogen. It only produced 180 HP..... The H2 hydrogen concept is old so who knows what kind of strides this TX company made in improving the efficiency of an ICE running on hydrogen. The fuel cell concept is more viable for a hydrogen powered vehicle. It takes hydrogen to create electricity to power the electric motor. You can still go to a hydrogen fueling station to fill up just like a gas powered car. Last edited by quagmire; 04-25-2013 at 01:21 PM.. |

I believe that the dinosaurs (and other critters and plants of their time) died so that I may enjoy them millions of years later. Why dishonor their memory?
