Check engine light from too low octane gas?

Can lower than spec'd octane gas in a car cause the CEL to come on? I put some brand-x 89 in a car that takes 91. CEL came on, though it drove fine. I balanced the mix with some 93 and soon after the CEL went back out.

That can only be caused if the lower octane caused a misfire. Random misfire lights go off on their own but are still stored in the ecu. Get a reader and if its a random misfire code, there in lies your issue
