Any poker players out there?
Well the 2007 WSOP is coming to a close. For those of you who have been keeping up. Phil Hellmuth Jr is atop the record with 11. He won one this year, neither Chan nor Brunson met him in this challenge this year. The main event is coming to a close as well. Our favored pro Lee Watkinson got knocked out already, once again, it's down to amateurs! 8.25 million on the line with over 6000 players in the 10k buy in . Can't wait for these to show on ESPN!

Phil is a whining tool. That can really play poker.
Have not kept up lately but is that really obnoxious Australian guy still around? The one that says "I am going to crush you like a little girl".

I don't think Jamie Gold was a fluke like Moneymaker was. Unless he was bluffing, Gold consistently played with what he thought was the best hand. Usually he was right. His skill level is not to the level of Hachem or Raymer, but it was good enough to steamroll everyone. To state the obvious...when you play good poker AND catch cards, you are usually unstoppable.

I agree with this statement.... Jamie caught good cards, played reverse, reverse psychology on everyone, and had Chan in his corner as a coach.

Raymer and Hachem were more deserving because I think throughout the tournament, they were put in every position possible, and both went through it, making it look easy! Gold, on the other hand, was at the top of the chip count for a good amount of time. |

It takes a lot of skill to maintain your chips though. All it takes is 2-3 mistakes and all of a sudden you lose what you thought was an insurmountable chip lead. That's why I think it's easier becoming chip leader than it is staying as chip leader. Since you are involved in many more hands than you normally would as chip leader, your skills are put to the test more often when you need to know when to lay down marginal hands or something like middle pair heads up.
That's what was impressive to me with how Gold kept building and building his chip lead when he was playing in more and more hands since he could afford to. I mean I saw him play with absolute shit like 3,6 offsuit but just limped in anyways and then flop trip 6s. Then with those trips, he extracted quite a bit of money from his opponent.

I was really pulling for Negreanu or Hansen to take it this year. If I read correctly, even Tobey Maguire (yes, Peter Parker) outlasted Negreanu.
Props to Yang though (no, not Yahoo). I read that he won his WSOP seat through a Pechanga satellite. |
