Losing my mind with the 9-5

Anybody here have any good stories of quitting a job you hate? I want to live vicariously through you...

For those of you still stuck in a job you hate, how are you coping?

Not me obviously... but my two favorites on the web....

I'm sure you're job could be worse. I've been away from my family 3 different times for 12 months in a row, 36 months total... all while being shot at. Let me know if you want to switch.

Edit: not trying to gain any pity, I'm just saying... but if you have a desk job, I feel for you.

Hate my job as well, only thing that gets me thru the day is knowing it pays my bills, and allows me to have a fun car and a fun time outside of work. What gets me thru the day is the forums, facebook, jalopnik, various other sites, good music and Google chat. I really want to find a more exciting job, but all of the exciting job i'd like to do, I'd have to take a pay cut.

I used to work at PWC (pricewaterhousecoopers).

i hated working there well after a week of work had passed.. i was going for my certified degree at that time and had to work in a big firm to get proper experience (you need three years to sign as an accountant).

anw i hated working there. managers didn't give a damn about employees, we worked late without a thank you, and frankly i hated accounting as well.

around 6 months in i was staying for a two weeks in the office until 9 to finish a company because we had a meeting with the clients. i finished the job on thursday night. friday at 5 i picked up my things and i was leaving on time, passed by the managers office and said goodbye, he turns and says "so early??". not a thank you for staying all those days late no nothing. i said thats it i'm quitting.

i already had an offer from another company, called them that afternoon and arranged a meeting on monday. went there, got the job.

all employees there were miserable (they still are) so i thought of giving them the pleasure listening to me quitting and my boss shocked. called a co workers mobile, they all gathered up, had me on speaker phone, i went in and told him i had another offer and that i wanted to quit.. hope it was as good for them as it was for me..

god i hated it there..

tl;dr read only first line and last paragraph

Basically the exact same thing for me except the assholes i work for block almost everything on the internet. But ya i hate my job with the deepest passion! Only thing that pushes me through the door every morning is the fact that i love my car and it pays my bills, and allows me to have extra money. I have thought about selling everything, taking a 50% paycut and being happy but ya, i cant seem to put an orange and black sign on my car and move to a shit apartment. Im at a dodge dealership working our shop counter in parts,we make decent money but the job and the people suck. My only advice to you is, dont EVER go work for a dealership!! once you start its damn near impossible to get out.

Was on Wall Street so to speak, working in an IB, got bored and burnt out, and got recruited by a consulting firm. I had my licenses and was a NY barred attorney, so I knew the NASD regs (for you college kids, that predated FINRA) and notice to members like the back of my hand. The partner yelled at me when I said there was no reg covering what she claimed was covered by a reg. I said if we include a recommendation to a client based on this made up reg, it would not be good for me, and I would not put my name on it. She was confusing a Notice to Member, with a Reg, and this was the 3 time in 6 weeks something stupid lik this had happened. She was a teacher, turned accountant, turned securities consultant turned Partner at the firm.

Don't even get me started what the head of the firm at the annual meeting......stuff came out of his mouth that would have forced my undergrad professors to fail him.......just utter non-sense. Another good one was a senior manager asking the question to a client "What is Journaling"......which is like a car mechanic asking what does one mean by "Changing the Oil".

So, I had had it, and told the partner at my consulting firm not only would I not put my name to that but that she was DEAD wrong. Told her that we could call any attorney in the country to confirm my analysis and that my conclusion was correct.

But I didn't quit, I wanted to get paid to stay home.....I had a contract and just did enough to get them to let me go, so I could get a sweet severance package and go start my own company, which I did, which paid for my ///M.

To this day, worst job ever, should have never taken that job.

Cheers,
e46e92

Freaking awesome! Didn't know people filmed it and put it on the web for the lulz. brb saving to computer and replaying while at work.

Respect for being in the military. I think you guys don't get enough of that honestly. People are too soft nowadays.

Wow. I think you described the experience of one of my friend's friend. He worked at PWC had the same issues, quit and is now a firefighter. I almost fell for PWC when they came to speak at uni...good thing I didn't buy what they were selling.

That must've felt good to quit and have backup ready to go. I think that's the best way to do it because you're 100% sure.

Damn, that's a sweet way to go out! Milk em dry. Sounds tempting and financially better than just quitting and not getting the sev.

Respect for opening your own company! I have to admit, I'm a little jelly but your story inspires me.

I honestly don't know and not trying to be disrespectful in any way... Do you really get shot at while stationed in Germany?

That last part - not having enough time is the thing that gets me the most...

Was referring to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo... Believe it or not, shit went down in Kosovo while I was there.... I wasn't referring to Germany. If I include Germany, I have been overseas for 9 years total.. lol

Haven't found the "perfect job" yet. Right now work rotating shifts, we work midnight-noon for 7 days, then noon-midnight for 14 days. Its 2k miles from home so after the 21 days are over, I fly home for 19 days off. For me I wouldn't mind trying the 9-5, as long as I am doing something I enjoy.

I cope with my job, knowing that in 3-5 years I'll have invested enough money that I can leave my rig and finally get a job on land and be home every night. Also I should be retired by 50 so it keeps me going.

Hope there are jobs out there, other than the oil and gas industry, working on rigs...
