Cool idea, but there are some concerns that immediately come to mind: maintenance, security, durability.
Maintenance: road crews have a hard enough time keeping up with asphalt/concrete roads as it is, now you want to throw in solar panels, electronics, composites, computers, etc? Security: These are miles and miles of electronic devices, what would prevent some desperate people from digging up these roads for the electronics inside of them? Durability: This would be the biggest factor. Not only Im I referring to whether or not the glass can hold up, but the electronics inside of them as well. You are adding many parts to something that will get the most wear and tear in the world, when the only "part" on current roads are the roads themselves. Those panels have to withstand the billions of cars that travel over them every year, and all the weather brutalizing them as well. Not to mention severe weather, like tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, etc. Another thing is price. Who would be paying for all this? We would, the tax payers. Not only for the materials, but the upkeep, the training for the road crews, the installation, all of it. I'm not bashing it, because the guy in the video is right, we need to move onto something new if its going to help us in the long run. I would LOVE to see something like this go full scale. Its just not going to be a tiny step getting there. |

Traction in the dry, sure. Traction in the wet? Sounds like a disaster.
Not to mention that if the road surface ever does crack or break, it will, then you have instant tire punctures for all. |
