food poisioning! FML

had a cup of chilli from Wendy's today for lunch (bad call). Got home from work, ran to the bathroom and I have been throwing up massive liquid since. It's getting worse now that I'm shitting water too. plus I'm feeling dizzy.

Should I seek for help or just ride this out at home?

From Mayo Clinic:

Food poisoning often improves on its own within 48 hours. To help keep yourself more comfortable and prevent dehydration while you recover, try the following:

Let your stomach settle. Stop eating and drinking for a few hours.
Try sucking on ice chips or taking small sips of water. You might also try drinking clear soda, such as 7UP or Sprite, clear broths, or noncaffeinated sports drinks such as Gatorade. Affected adults should try to drink at least eight to 16 glasses of liquid every day, taking small, frequent sips. You'll know that you're getting enough fluid when you're urinating normally and your urine is clear and not dark.
Ease back into eating. Gradually begin to eat bland, easy-to-digest foods such as soda crackers, toast, gelatin, bananas and rice. Stop eating if your nausea returns.
Avoid certain foods and substances until you're feeling better. These include dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and fatty or highly seasoned foods.
Get plenty of rest. The illness and dehydration may have made you weak and tired.
Don't use anti-diarrheal medications. Drugs intended to treat diarrhea, such as loperamide (Imodium) and diphenoxylate with atropine (Lomotil), may slow elimination of bacteria or toxins from your system and can make your condition worse.

This doesn't actually mean that you got "food poisoning" from food you ate that recently. Typically it takes a minimum of 8 hours for true food poisoning to work into your system. There can be things that disagree with you (ie. allergies or things that your system has a hard time processing) that aren't necessarily "food poisoning". Food poisoning can occur up to 72 hours after ingestion so it could have been something you ate over the previous couple of days.

The process would be to call your health board. They will instruct you to provide a stool sample (squirt sample in your case ) and then process it. You should notify the restaurant of exactly what you ate and, as a franchise, they will go through their own safety protocol.

Don't feel like eating at all. Trying to drink water but can't keep it down.

Not sure if I could remember what I had in 72 hours. barely remember last nights. Pretty sure it's the chilli, I felt sick right after I had it.

Just threw up the water I drank.

I'm signing off. later.

That chili has probably been brewing in that pot for weeks. Roll the dice, pay the price!

You need to be carefull with the advice people give you. The most common types of food poisoning are either viral or bacteria. The advice of it clearing up after 48 hours is only and I mean only if it's a viral infection. If symptoms persists after that, that means you have a bacterial infection and would need antibiotics.

How do I know? I had really bad food poisoning once. Same symptoms as you with a 103 degree fever. I went to the doctor and this was the explanation he gave me. He told me two wait it out and come back in two days, in the mean time they took a stool sample. Two days later it didn't get any better results of the sample Escherichia coli (E coli). Antibiotics was the only thing that cleared me up.

My suggestion is if it doesn't get any better in a day or two go see the doctor. In the mean time drink plenty of fluids including Pedialyte. It's better than gatorade in this situation.

I usually drink 7up or Ginger Ale when I feel like that. Do you sweat really bad when you vomit? may have the flu.

I genuinely hope you feel better soon.

But as I mentioned previously, true food poisoning does not typically manifest itself immediately after ingestion.

Not true. Certain bacterial toxins and inorganic chemicals will cause a massive reaction within 1-6 hours of ingestion(for example, S. aureus enterotoxins). What you are referring to is an infectious process like e. coli or an enterovirus.

I suspect that the OP likely had something contaminated with a bacterial toxin, given how quick and large a reaction he is having. In such a case, antibiotics are not helpful (the pre-formed toxin is causing the issue), and your only option is really to wait things out.

My suggestion to OP: Food poisoning is usually self resolving, but if you're unable to keep fluids down, and this goes on for a significant period of time, you need to go to the ER. Not to scare you, but you can get dehydrated rapidly and go into hypovolemic shock if you keep losing fluids for a given amount of time. You're starting to feel dizzy because you're dehydrated. You should also go to the doctor immediately if you have any blood in your vomit or stools (no-brainer there).

Good luck, and keep us updated!

Like everybody said, the different enteric bacteria can strike anywhere from an hour to days later. It depends on the specific bacteria and its "defenses" so to speak. Some of the more toxic ones will have you throwing up with just a few cells ingested while others require a large amount of cells to be ingested or time for them to replicate.

Theres nothing to do when it comes to food poisoning. Get your self some pedialite (that shit the kids drink) and chug the fuck out of it. Keep hydrated.

Feel better.

One more thing. Go to a drug store and get your self charcoal tablets. This will help a great deal to clean your system.

When I was in college (Yeah, they existed back then. Believe it or not ), a friend, who used to work at Wendy's, did reveal that they were ordered by the manager to not throw away the beef patties from left over burgers. He found out later they were being used to "thicken up" the Chili.
