Weekend Warrior - Loan some advice
Hey guys -
My pops is looking to add another car to keep the E46 M3 company. He is in love with the E60 M5, but I hate it! It is just a 5er with huge HP/TQ numbers. I would like to get him to lean towards some other vehicles. Not looking for anything crazy here... Budget is ~45-50k. Obviously USED is key. I have been looking around and I love the (2005) 911, but it is a bit pricey. Suggestions would be appreciated. |

CPO '09 Cayman S?
C6 Z06? I'm not a fan of the E60 M5 either, but if your dad loves it, it's his car, let him get what he likes.

The E60 M5 would have been my suggestion as well, but it looks like you've shot that down. And it's not "just a 5er with huge HP/TQ numbers" just the same as the M3 is not just a 3er with a big engine.... Tsk, tsk...
If you streched a little bit on price or didn't mind a car with a few miles, a 993 Turbo could be had as well. That'll hold its value well too. |

No, don't tsk tsk!! I am speaking cosmetically! E92 M3 compared to a 335 has (cosmetically): Different Hood, Mirrors, Exhaust, Rear Diffuser, Side Vents, etc. I mean, the E60 compared to a 550 is basically just the side vents, bumper and exhaust. LAME Regarding the 993, I think that going '05 Carerra would make more sense. I understand the perf. difference, but they are way to close in price to warrant spending 60k on a 13 year old car. |

LAME The 993 Turbo will hold its value a LOT better than an '05 Carrera.

I don't think you are seeing what I am saying though... I hate the M5 because it resembles a 5series way too much. Nothing overly aggressive about it; definitely doesn't scream V10 to me... Also, what else would you compare cars on? Did you not buy your (beautiful) 135 because of its looks? I surely bought my car in Space Gray because it has curb appeal. |

Spending 50-60k on a 13 year old car (assuming that's the 993 Turbo) will be a MUCH better investment than an '05 Carrera. Some would like to argue it would also be a more fun car to drive (especially if you like being on the brink of death consistently). There's no way in hell I'd consider an '05 Carrera over a 993 Turbo as a weekend car, but that's just my humble opinion. Also, if you're basing your merit system on looks alone, the 993 looks much better than the 996. |

It's the perfect mix of practicality and performance. I daily drive it, take it to the beach with longboards on the roof racks, and autocross it on the weekends. Out of the 12 cars I test drove, the 135 fit the needs. The base Cayman I test drove was beautiful, but when considering the practicality and performance, the 135 was the car to have. (Base Cayman, not Cayman S) Quote:
Doesn't mean I personally like it, but I can see why your dad would.

I'm lost as to what we are even arguing; you yourself said that you aren't a fan of the M5.
Moving on, this is a car to be driven on the weekends during nice weather. I appreciate your two suggestions Mark, but you're getting fired up and throwing shit around such as the "boy-racer" line. Cool the jets, thanks for the help. Quote:
I never said it was about looks, but I do have a lot of input when it comes to this purchase, considering we share a lot of things. lol @ being on the brink of death. I will do some more research on the 993. |

LOL I'm getting fired up? Ok.
I know I said I don't personally like it, but you said it was your dad's car, so it didn't matter if you or I like it. Now that you mention you have input because you will be sharing it, that changes things slightly. You still have to value his opinion though, I'm assuming he's paying for the car.

I guess some facts were missing.
Moving on from our previous posts.... ...he came to me asking for a few suggestions - in turn, I obviously came here. I introduced him to the E46 (even down to the Imola Red Interior, which he had no idea existed). Put it this way, my father is an enthusiast at heart, but lacks the knowledge. Does that make sense? It's friday after all. |

A 08 M5 has the vents, exhaust, wheels, hood...everything you said about the M3
You're contradicting yourself

Is he looking to get a similar car for around that price or something for a slightly different use (daily driver, track, or family car)? If the same, I'd say get an e92 M3. You could probably get an '08 or perhaps an '09 with decent mileage.

I agree with the others - the M5 is a classy looking car; it's understated, but enthusiasts will recognize it immediately. It's not the most flamboyant or the most beautiful car, but it looks much better in person, and will grow on you with time. An added plus - it's a hugely practical car. Get one with the fold-down rear seats, and it becomes incredibly useful. It's not really clear what SORT of car you are looking for - if it's something that will be a weekend 'joy ride' car, a used Porsche is an option. What about a used Cayman S? Not very practical but it's a blast to drive. If you need something practical, then M5/C63 is probably the way to go. You might even want to look into the E63 - I don't like how it looks, but I'm sure it's fun to drive. Good luck |
