Here you go. Porsche's new Widow Maker.

Look closely at CAR's new spy pictures and you’ll spot the subtle front wheelarch extensions lifted from the GT3 RS that allow for a wider front track. Other GT3 RS adoptions are thought to include fabric interior door handles, a titanium exhaust and a full roll cage, while Porsche’s Active Drivetrain Mounts (PADM) and adjustable suspension (PASM) should be standard.

Also lifted from the GT3 RS (and 'boggo' GT3) are the centre-lock alloys, the air vent ahead of the bonnet, and the stripped-out interior. Ceramic brakes keep the kerbweight down too, as does the rear-drive chassis – there’s no fancy four-wheel drive system here.

Options like a lithium-ion battery help shave a further 10kg. The latest news out of Stuttgart is that the new 911 GT2 RS will weigh 90kg less than it predecessor, thanks in part to carbonfibre air intakes and vents, and other GT3 RS diet secrets.

And just how much power do those two rear wheels have to deal with?
We hear 600PS, so that’s 592bhp from the direct-injection, twin-turbo 3.8-litre flat six. And expect near to 600lb ft of lugging torque as well. Combine that grunt with a launch control system and the new 911 GT2 should hit 62mph in under 3.5 seconds, and the torque figure should provide scary mid-range acceleration.

Of course, a six-speed manual is the only gearbox option and Cup tyres will mean it’s a handful in the wet. But on a dry track it should be epic – a Nurburgring time of 7min 22sec has been mooted, meaning it’s quicker than that pesky Nissan GT-R.

Other tweaks and changes over the first-gen 997 GT2 include the latest LED rear lights and a revised interior.

The new Porsche 911 GT2 RS was revealed to a select group of VIPs and dealers this past weekend, and will be go on sale in summer 2010. As for price, we expect it to be north of £150k. Only the rich (and raving mad thrill seekers) need apply.

Very nice. I can not wait to see which is better, Porsche GT2 RS or McLaren MP4-12C, both 3.8l, twin-turbo, dual-clutch, RWD. IMO MP4-12C looks even better than 458 Italia, and 911 is.....just a 911.
I am surprised BMW M is criticized for going FI, but nobody says anything against when the fastest Porsche is FI.

The car is epic. I wonder what the Carrera GT replacement will do as even a 911 is now eclipsing the CGT.

No, I could fully purchase a GT2 RS if it was that important to me (provided I got an allocation).

I think it only seems epic to stop light racers who imagine mashing the accelerator next to other boy racers. However, as a track car, I am very mixed about the GT2 RS.

Noob question, but what are the differences between a GT2 RS and GT3 RS except for the turbo and substantial power?

Big difference.

One is a "track oriented" car based closely on the competition Porsche Cup Car and the other is not. The GT3 platform directly competes with the M3 GTR, Corvette C6R, and Ferrari F430 GT2.

The GT2 doesn't fit into GT racing regulations (though it oddly keeps the namesake), and AFAIK, a GT2 hasn't raced in any major race since the 90s since the 993 platform. If you want to get into a car that is as close to what Porsche actually runs in races like LeMans or the FIA GT, then the GT3 RS is it.

That being said, some people don't care about motorsport legacy or history, and care more about how fast they'll be able to get to the next stop light, or how badly they'll beat their friends tuned 335i. For that, the GT2 RS is probably one of the best cars for that, provided you can afford it.

Compared to the current GT3 RS, this one appears to lack an adjustable rear wing. GT2 also has launch control.
I'd reckon the difference is not just in the outright power difference, but how the power is delivered. This becomes very important when adjusting your line while on the throttle.

Here's the Fifth Gear episode where Tiff Needell(former Formula and LeMans driver) compares the Euro GT3 RS to the Porsche Cup Car.

He found the cars more or less the same, and almost matched the lap time of the cup car.

You're correct; the 993 was actually being raced in... surprise, a class known as GT2 back then. Then the Vipers came in...

You can probably use the 997 GT2 RS as a homologation for GT1 (keeping in mind Porsche's nomenclature is out of sync w/ the FIA and ACO). However I don't know of any turbo/supercharged cars in that class, or if they're even allowed.

However the GT2 isn't a GT car by any definition. It simply doesn't fit into the regulations. Just because a car cuts weight, and does a lot of other tweaking that improves performance doesn't make it a GT car because you say so. The FIA GT tech regulations are a very long list:
